  • Patent number: 5362082
Abstract: The adjustable lateral support for a wheelchair includes a slotted block body housing member fastened to the solid back of a wheelchair. The slotted block body cooperates with a spring loaded locking pin that engages a sliding multiaxis, multiholed hinged bracket. The slotted block body also provides a track for adjustments of the bracket in medial and lateral directions along with placement in specific vertical positions on the solid back. Release of the spring loaded locking pin permits engagement into the multiholed bracket and locks it into place in the slotted block body. Pulling the spring loaded locking pin out of the multiholed angle bracket permits it to slide into a new position into the slotted block housing member or enables the angle bracket to be completely removed. The multiholed angle bracket is sectioned into two parts and connected together by a locking hinge joint. A support pad attached to a most distal end of the bracket can thus rotate away from a midline orientation.

  • Patent number: 5320416
Abstract: The abduction wedge assembly for a wheelchair includes an abduction member joined to a slide, pivot and height extension mechanism that permits the abduction wedge member to be compatibly joined to wheelchairs of selected seat thickness. The slide, pivot and height extension mechanism which is joined to the base of a wheelchair seat includes a slidable member that is longitudinally slidable with respect to a fixed slide guide located at the base of the wheelchair seat. The slide member can be extended to a limit position that permits pivoting of the abduction member from an on-seat position to an off-seat position. The slide, pivot and height extension mechanism further includes a height adjustment member to which the abduction member is joined. The height adjustment member enables the abduction wedge member to be compatibly fitted to wheelchair seats of any thickness. A locking mechanism provided on the slide guide locks the slide member in any selected longitudinally extended position.

  • Patent number: 5308028
Abstract: The headrest support for a wheelchair includes a horizontal member with a pair of slide-adjustable clamping blocks that each hold a vertical member. Spacer blocks are provided at the ends of the horizontal member for mounting the headrest support to the back of the chair while allowing the necessary clearance for adjustment of the clamping blocks that lock into position along the horizontal member. A separate locking mechanism on each clamping block provides for independent continuous vertical adjustment of each of the vertical members. Each vertical member supports a forward/rearward member which permits forward/rearward adjustment of a padded occipital support that connects to the forwardmost end of the forward/rearward members. The forward/rearward members also permit adjustment of upward/downward tilt of the occipital support. Selected points of attachment of the forward/rearward members to the occipital support determine the degree of clockwise/counterclockwise rotation and obliquity.

  • Patent number: 5242138
Abstract: The arm rest for a wheelchair includes a pair of upright members pivotable with respect to a cross piece assembly. The cross piece assembly includes an arm rest surface or cushion asymmetrically mounted to a cross member such that one end of the arm rest surface projects from one end of the cross member whereas an opposite end of the arm rest surface is retracted from an opposite end of the cross member. The arm rest is detachably received in an arm rest holder of a wheelchair and can be positioned with a front end extension. The arm rest can also be detached from the wheelchair and reversed in position such that the front end projecting portion of the arm rest surface is directed toward the rear of the wheelchair, to provide extended arm rest support at the rear, as when the user is in a reclined position. The arm rest is also height adjustable, angle adjustable, and removable.
