Patent number: 8626959Abstract: An approach is provided in which a device is detected when it has been added to an operating system partition. The detecting occurs during a dynamic reconfiguration process, and the device is associated with a device type. A parent device is identified that corresponds to the added device. The identifying of the parent device is performed during the dynamic reconfiguration process and the identification of the parent device is based on the device type of the added device with the identified parent device corresponding to a parent device name. A unit address corresponding to the added device is retrieved and this retrieved unit address and the identified parent device name are passed to a configuration manager process. The added device is then configured based on the identified parent device name.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2011Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gary Lee Ruzek, Chris Alan Schwendiman

Patent number: 8527816Abstract: A method, system, and computer usable program product for identifying a defective adapter are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A configuration process of the adapter is initiated, the adapter being coupled with a slot in a data processing system. An indication of the configuration process is activated. A determination is made whether the configuration has completed successfully. The indication is allowed to remain activated responsive to the configuration not completing successfully. The activated indication identifies the defective adapter.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2010Date of Patent: September 3, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: James A Lindeman, Orlando O'Neill, Gary Lee Ruzek, Chris Alan Schwendiman

Patent number: 7930594Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for processing trace data in a logical partitioned data processing system. A partition causing an exception is identified in response to detecting the exception. The partition is one within a set of partitions in the logical partitioned data processing system. The trace data for the identified partition is stored in an error log or other data structure for a machine check interrupt handler.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2008Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Alongkorn Kitamorn, Ashwini Kulkarni, Gordon D. McIntosh, Gary Lee Ruzek

Patent number: 7496729Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions in a logical partitioned data processing system for managing trace data. A call is received for the trace data from a calling partition within a plurality of partitions in the logical partitioned data processing system. The trace data in a buffer associated with the calling partition to form identified trace data is identified. Only the identified trace data for the calling partition is returned. The trace data for other partitions within the plurality of partitions is not returned to the calling partition.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 2004Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Gordon D. McIntosh, Gary Lee Ruzek

Patent number: 7370240Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for preserving trace data in a logical partitioned data processing system. A call is received from a partition in a plurality of partitions to register a buffer in the partition for the trace data. The call includes a pointer to the buffer. The buffer is associated with a trace routine in platform firmware. The trace routine stores the trace data for calls made by the partition to the platform firmware in the buffer.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2004Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: George John Dawkins, Alongkorn Kitamorn, Ashwini Kulkarni, Gordon D. Patent number: 7010726Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer implemented instructions for saving data in a logically partitioned data processing system. An error is detected in the logically partitioned data processing system. Data needed for error analysis of the error is saved in a power independent memory associated with a service processor.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2001Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Allan Faust, Kevin Gene Kehne, Sayileela Nulu, Gary Lee Ruzek

Patent number: 6910160Abstract: A system, method, and product in a logically partitioned data processing system are disclosed for preserving trace data after a partition crash. The logically partitioned data processing system includes multiple, different processors. An error is encountered in one of the processors. Data associated with the error is stored in a trace buffer. Contents of the trace buffer are stored prior to the data being overwritten.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2002Date of Patent: June 21, 2005Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Aditi Bajoria, Gordon D. McIntosh, Kanisha Patel, Gary Lee Ruzek
