  • Patent number: 7336527
Abstract: An electromechanical storage device includes an input element that facilitates the input of data, a series of data elements, and a terminating element that facilitates the reading out of data. The data elements each have at least two stable mechanical orientations, and these orientations can be utilized to store data. Data may be entered into the device by applying a transient electromagnetic pulse to the data elements. The device is constructed such that as a data bit is entered into the series of data elements, any data bits that have been previously entered into the series are shifted towards the terminating element.

  • Patent number: 6313461
Abstract: A scanning-aperture electron microscope system and method in which a radiation source generates a radiation beam that is incident upon a surface of a sample material causing electrons to be ejected from the surface. When magnetic imaging is being performed, a polarization rotator polarization-modulates the radiation beam. A scanning-aperture probe having an aperture is positioned in proxiity to the surface of the sample material so that photoelectrons ejected from the surface of the sample material pass through the aperture. A detector detects the electrons passing through the aperture. The electron detector outputs a signal in response to the detected electrons that is used for imaging magnetic and/or spectroscopic features of the surface of the sample material. The resolution of the imaged features is about equal to a size of the aperture.

  • Patent number: 6049078
Abstract: A ultrathin, hollow, shell-shaped tip for use in a scanning tunneling microscopy system. A bias across a sample and the tip permits electrons tunneling from the surface of the sample to pass through the tip. Several properties of the tunneling electrons may be determined in such a system including the spin orientation, energy, and time dependence, for example. By rastering the sample across the tip, these properties can be imaged across the sample. A high resolution magnetic image of the sample can be generated.

  • Patent number: 5675531
Abstract: The invention relates to a storage device for storage of information using field emission comprising two spaced apart members. Each member comprises a plurality of parallel conducting lines having adsorbates disposed thereon. The lines are disposed on a nonconductive substrate. The members are positioned with the parallel conducting lines of each member facing each other without planar alignment of the lines of one member with the lines of the other member.
