    Abstract: The invention provides an automated caller interaction system that interacts with an operator service system via both a telephone network and a data network. When a call is received, the service provider device interacts with the caller to receive information until the service provider determines that operator assistance is required. When an operator is required, the service provider device generates an operator request and sends the request to an operator service system through the telephone network. The operator service system identifies an available operator and the available operator is connected via a voice connection to the calling party through a bridge provided by the service provider device. The operator interacts with the caller, obtains any needed information, and provides such information to the service provider device via the data network.

    Abstract: A novel shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator which responds to changes in ambient temperature. The actuator is capable of operating bidirectionally over a smaller temperature range than conventional SMA actuators by taking advantage of the R-phase characteristics of the SMA material. A coiled SMA spring 14 is provided with an enabled R-phase by limiting recoverable strain in the SMA material to less than about 1 percent. The force of the SMA spring 14 is counteracted by a non-SMA spring 15. The stronger of the two springs 14, 15 controls the position of an actuating element 13, with SMA spring 14 being the stronger spring while in its austenitic phase and being the weaker spring while in its R-phase. Triggering the actuator with entry into the R-phase rather than the martensitic phase during cooling reduces the hysteresis normally associated with an SMA actuator, allowing the actuator to react bidirectionally to smaller changes in ambient temperature.

    Abstract: A process to remove a semiconductor die from a plastic package and then to reassemble the die in a high reliability hermetic package. The process is used to remove an already existing die using a unique disassembly and etching process and make the removed die more reliable by reattaching the die and rebonding all new die wires into either a hermetic package or a different type of package with a “bond-on-top-of-bond” technique. The original bondfoot on the removed die may be first preconditioned by a novel bond-flattening tool, which can be attached to the bond-head chuck of any wirebonder. Also, the die can be used in other applications with different pin-outs or configurations.

    Abstract: It has been discovered that wires and small diameter rods can be produced using laser deposition technology in a novel way. An elongated article such as a wire or rod is constructed by melting and depositing particulate material into a deposition zone which has been designed to yield the desired article shape and dimensions. The article is withdrawn from the deposition zone as it is formed, thus enabling formation of the article in a continuous process. Alternatively, the deposition zone is moved along any of numerous deposition paths away from the article being formed.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling write operations for a data storage system during and after a shock event is disclosed. A shock sensor measures the magnitude of a shock event and compares the magnitude of the shock event to at least two predetermined thresholds. Write operations are then inhibited based upon the comparison of the magnitude of the shock event and the at least two predetermined thresholds. When the shock event meets a first upper threshold, the write is inhibited until the write is requalified. The write is executed if the measured shock event does not meet a second lower threshold and the write is paused for a predetermined time period when the measured shock event meets the second lower threshold but does not meet the first upper threshold.

    Abstract: Atomic memory operations are provided by using exportable “fetch and add” instructions and by emulating IA-32 instructions prepended with a lock prefix. In accordance with the present invention, a CPU includes a default control register that includes IA-32 lock check enable bit (LC) that when set to “1”, causes an IA-32 atomic memory reference to raise an IA-32 intercept lock fault. An IA-32 intercept lock fault handler branches to appropriate code to atomically emulate the instruction. Furthermore, the present invention defines an exportable fetch and add (FETCHADD) instruction that reads a memory location indexed by a first register, places the contents read from the memory location into a second register, increments the value read from the memory location, and stores the sum back to the memory location.

    Abstract: A hand-held input device provides a directional force feedback that acts on a housing of the device. The input device includes a threaded shaft that is rotatably driven by an electric motor. The motor causes a mass to move in response to a control signal received from a host computing device, such as personal computer that is executing a game or simulation. When the mass is rapidly accelerated or abruptly stopped in response to the control signal, the change in momentum of the mass imparts a directional reactive force to the housing, and an operator holding the housing feels the haptic force.

    Abstract: Compounds that modulate natural &bgr; amyloid peptide aggregation are provided. The modulators of the invention comprise a peptide, preferably based on a &bgr; amyloid peptide, that is comprised entirely of D-amino acids. Preferably, the peptide comprises 3-5 D-amino acid residues and includes at least two D-amino acid residues independently selected from the group consisting of D-leucine, D-phenylalanine and D-valine. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the peptide is a retro-inverso isomer of a &bgr; amyloid peptide, preferably a retro-inverso isomer of A&bgr;17-21. In certain embodiments, the peptide is modified at the amino-terminus, the carboxy-terminus, or both. Preferred amino-terminal modifying groups include cyclic, heterocyclic, polycyclic and branched alkyl groups. Preferred carboxy-terminal modifying groups include an amide group, an alkyl amide group, an aryl amide group or a hydroxy group.

    Abstract: Mixtures of sorbitol fatty acid esters useful as low calorie fat substitutes are prepared through a direct esterification process. The process entails the direct esterification of sorbitol with free fatty acids, optionally in the presence of an esterification catalyst. The resulting sorbitol esters have an average degree of hydroxyl substitution ranging from about 3 to about 5.5. This partial esterification leads to a mixture of esters capable of serving as low calorie fat substitutes without undesirable physiological side effects or the need for additives. Furthermore, the direct esterification process proceeds without the need for large amounts of organic solvents or bleaching agents.
