  • Patent number: 11742659
Abstract: A power system for an electrical system with highly fluctuating loads is powered by one or more power sources that are slow to react to load changes. The power sources are connected to electrical equipment used on the drill rig which provide active load to the generate. One or more load banks may be positioned to provide passive load to the generators to maintain generally constant generator load, while allowing for instant access to power as active load increases. Generators may be run at 100% capacity, a maximum efficient capacity, or at a high enough level to allow for a sufficiently rapid increase in power output. At least one parameter of a drilling operation may be utilized to anticipate load demand changes.

  • Publication number: 20150263650
Abstract: A predictive landing failsafe system is adapted to slow or stop a permanent magnet AC motor in response to a selected condition, such as a power outage. In some embodiments, the predictive landing failsafe system may short two or more terminals of the AC motor in response to the selected condition. In some embodiments, one or more resistors may be coupled between the two or more terminals, the resistors lowering the short-circuit current and thus making a more smooth stop for the AC motor. In some embodiments, the AC motor may be used in a drawworks.

  • Publication number: 20080007318
Abstract: An adaptive gate drive for an inverter includes control circuitry having a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and includes power circuitry having a plurality of FETs for operating a switching device, such as a Trench Gate Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT device). The control circuitry provides switching signals for operating the switching device. In addition, the control circuitry receives signals of output current of the IGBT device, temperature of the IGBT device, and DC link voltage. The FPGA has a plurality of operating points stored therein. Each operating point has corresponding parameters for a control signal that is used to control the turn-on or turn-off behavior of the IGBT device. During operation, the control circuitry compares the measured current, voltage and temperature operating points stored in the FPGA and sends the corresponding parameters to the gate drive circuit.
