  • Patent number: 7806820
Abstract: An apparatus and method for automatic balancing and inertial damping of vibrations in a rotor are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a rotor drive shaft is adapted to mount a rotor and rotate the rotor. A lower drive shaft connects to a source of rotation. A flexible coupling attaches the rotor drive shaft to the lower drive shaft and transfers a rotational force applied by the source of rotation to the rotor while permitting relative lateral motion between the rotor drive shaft and the lower drive shaft. An inertial coupling is coupled to the rotor drive shaft and provides inertial resistance to the relative lateral motion. A clamping collar is coupled to the inertial coupling to couple the inertial coupling to a chassis and permit the relative lateral motion between the rotor drive shaft and the lower drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 5921148
Abstract: A method to dampen vibrations of a centrifuge by restraining vertical movement of a disk rotatably attached to the centrifuge's drive shaft. Damping bearings contact with the disk to restrain movement. Means responsive to the radial displacement of the disk activate the damping bearings beyond a predetermined displacement.

  • Patent number: 5851170
Abstract: A centrifuge and method of operation as a fixed angle or swinging angle centrifuge. A pair of cams cooperate with the centrifuge drive shaft to engage and maintain the buckets at a fixed angle. Tubes are automatically unloaded by moving a bracket away from the lower end of a bucket so that the tube drops from the bucket. When the cams are disengaged from the buckets, the buckets are allowed to swing freely.

  • Patent number: 5827168
Abstract: An apparatus to minimize vibrations of a centrifuge using sliding and damping bearings to restrain vertical movement of a disk rotatably attached to the centrifuge's drive shaft. Radial displacement of the disk beyond a predetermined distance activates the damping bearings against the disk.

  • Patent number: RE36341
Abstract: A centrifuge instrument and a rotor therefor which is loaded with sample containers automatically by gravity through an opening in a cover located over a core and, subsequent to centrifugation, is unloaded automatically, again assisted by gravity, through an opening in a floor disposed beneath the core. A sample container loading arrangement is provided to hold a plurality of sample containers and to individually present sample containers to the rotor.
