Abstract: A method of enabling a mobile station (MS) to perform initial ranging in a wireless communication system includes transmitting a first message to a base station (BS), the first message comprising an identifier which is digitally signed by using a private key corresponding to a public key included in a certificate of the MS and receiving a second message including a temporary session key that is digitally signed by using a private key corresponding to a public key included in a certificate of the BS. A security threat due to exposure of control signaling can be prevented by securely exchanging session keys between the BS and the MS.
