Patent number: 5368114Abstract: An under-reaming tool for use in preferably horizontal and extended reach bore holes includes a succession of stabilizers, under-reamers and expandable stabilizers. A common drilling mud activator is provided for the expandable elements of under-reamers and expandable stabilizers. A preferred under-reaming device comprises a main body with a number of guiding surfaces distributed over the circumference thereof which have a pitch increasing radially in an axial direction and with a ring collar formed as a piston in a surrounding cylinder housing having a small and a large radial annular surface, and having reaming pads/wings and/or stabilizer pads/wings in sliding contact with a respective guiding surface, the pads being taken up in ports in a jacket surrounding the main body, in such a way that the pads can only be moved radially relative to the jacket, the jacket being attached to or formed as a part of the cylinder housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1993Date of Patent: November 29, 1994Inventors: Geir Tandberg, Sigbjorn Sangesland, Asbjorn Andersen

Patent number: 5176212Abstract: A drill bit for drilling a hole in the ground, with cutting elements annular by cutting a core which, when it has reached a certain height, is continuously crushed by teeth on rolling cones. By combining these two processes, cutting and crushing, in this manner an improved drilling advancement is achieved as compared to separate use of these processes. The cutting elements show relatively small variations as to radial positioning, which renders it possible to find a common approximately optimal rotational speed of said elements. The core is weak and may be drilled out relatively easily by the aid of crushing, as compared to drilling pure holes. This is due to the fact that the core geometry causes a more efficient growth of fractures for each tooth penetration, and that the core, due to annular cutting, is free from radial tensions from the surrounding rock formations.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1992Date of Patent: January 5, 1993Inventor: Geir Tandberg
