  • Patent number: 7822765
Abstract: Described is a component-based control system involving the interface and middleware layers for collaborative exploratory search. The components include modules for multi-user input and display capabilities, and are individually configurable to allow simultaneous manipulation of multiple search parameters and algorithms. In a collaborative exploratory search, a team of people with a shared information need engage in exploratory search together. This search happens synchronously, leveraging realtime feedback in the search loop. The search team works together, finding patterns and information that each player individually might not have found, and doing so more efficiently than any single person could have. Each team member brings their own expertise and point of view to a shared problem. Distributing tasks and roles among team members leverages individual expertise and creates efficiencies of scale.

  • Publication number: 20100245563
Abstract: Systems and methods for facilitating use of non-electronic whiteboards and other large displays. Images of whiteboard are input to a computer device to provide automatic detection of a collaborative portion of content on the board created during a collaborative session and distribution to relevant collaborators alone while personal content of board is not distributed. Modification history of writings are preserved and displayed as change histograms to assist a user locate content that may have been erased. User finds the content by inspecting regions of board that correspond to user's memory of approximate location and time of modifying the content and are shown on the histogram as having been modified. Persistent reminder notes that clutter board space are detected and stored based on their location on the board and duration of persisting on the board so that they may be erased.

  • Publication number: 20100218099
Abstract: A system and method for accessing content provided by a presenter during a presentation is described. The system and method includes a presentation module used by a presenter to display presentation materials to audience members during a presentation. Also included is a selection module that allows a display of a representation of the presentation materials that have been displayed. When activated, the selection module enables an audience member to select for redisplay by the presentation module a particular one of the presentation materials.

  • Publication number: 20100123908
Abstract: Most documents that are in use today embed or link to animated content. Presently, a large percentage of online content is hypertext markup language (HTML) and many HTML documents embed animations. The aforesaid online content is amenable to printing. However, embedding animated content in a document will lead to information loss when the document is printed. Users cannot print the animations or the videos embedded in documents. Therefore, there is provided a method and system for automatically finding animated content embedded in documents such as web pages, slide presentations, word processing documents, and PDF documents, that are being displayed to a user, replacing the animated content by a printable version, such as a keyframe, and a unique code, and assigning each animation a URL, to allow the users to retrieve the animations via a website on computer displays or mobile devices as they read the printed document.

  • Patent number: 7644073
Abstract: The system enables novice teachers to leverage the expertise of other more experienced teachers who are distributed across geographical areas covered by similar teaching standards (usually states). By leveraging the vast body of knowledge contained within their peer group, the system is designed to help teachers produce better lesson plans. This is accomplished by providing teachers with suggestions based other teachers' plans for similar lessons.

  • Publication number: 20090079816
Abstract: A method is described for modifying behavior for social appropriateness in computer mediated communications. Data can be obtained representing the natural non-verbal behavior of a video conference participant. The cultural appropriateness of the behavior is calculated based on a cultural model and previous behavior of the session. Upon detecting that the behavior of the user is culturally inappropriate, the system can calculate an alternative behavior based on the cultural model. Based on this alternative behavior, the video output stream can be modified to be more appropriate by altering gaze and gesture of the conference participants. The output stream can be modified by using previously recorded images of the participant, by digitally synthesizing a virtual avatar display or by switching the view displayed to the remote participant. Once the user's behavior changes to be once again culturally appropriate, the modified video stream can be returned to unmodified state.

  • Publication number: 20090046061
Abstract: A system provides for controlling a cursor on a screen automatically and dynamically when using a video camera as a pointing device. A computer displays static or dynamic content to a screen. A video camera connected to the computer points at the screen. As the video camera films the screen, frames captured by the video camera are sent to the computer. A target image is displayed by the computer onto the screen and marks the position of the screen cursor of the video camera. Frames captured by the video camera include the target image, and the computer dynamically moves the target image on the screen to ensure that the target image stays in the center of the view of the video camera.

  • Patent number: 7474807
Abstract: The present invention includes systems, methods, and computer readable media for locating, sorting, and modifying images for future use. A conversion engine submits search requests to an image search engine and accepts the received results. The conversion engine arranges the search results according to selected visual characteristics of the image. Editing tools can then convert the results of the image search into vector based images which can be easily manipulated and enable users to modify the re-ranked images for future use.

  • Publication number: 20090006371
Abstract: Blogs (and other information sources) are recommended to a user based history of user's online activities. The system: (1) processes the user's web history, (2) identifies blog posts (and web pages) that link to pages read by the user, (3) generates multiple relevance scores for each identified post/page, and (4) produces multiple rankings of the corresponding source blogs (and web sites) by aggregating individual relevance scores (or combinations of relevance scores), according to users' preferences. The system allows the discovery of information sources that are likely to be interesting to the user and allows sources lost in the “long tail” to be seamlessly discovered.

  • Publication number: 20080288537
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention enable an approach to index segments of a media stream containing of visual and textual information, using a combination of visual, textual, auditory and temporal features to combine segments that correspond to topical contexts into logical groups. A visual/temporal/auditory/textual weighting scheme is adopted, which allows segments from elsewhere in the same media stream to affect the index terms associated with the current segment. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.

  • Publication number: 20080075320
Abstract: Described system makes it possible to charge copy fees related to the amount of copyrighted material being copied and to provide those fees to the appropriate copyright holder. The scanned information is passed through an OCR filter that produces a stream of text, which is then passed to a full-text search service that identifies matching passages in its index. Sufficiently long passages found in the copied document that match previously indexed documents held by the service constitute copyrighted materials. In addition, the scanned image may be processed to identify instances of copyrighted images present in the scan.

  • Patent number: 7343552
Abstract: Systems and methods in accordance with the present invention provide freeform annotation techniques designed to make freeform annotations on a digital document more flexible, reliable and presentable on a screen of a computing device. They allow users to markup the document, add comments, and link between annotations, while maintaining the freeform nature of these annotations without constraining the kinds of annotations allowed. These freeform annotations are then unequivocally recognized via a state machine into three groups of annotation marks: anchor, comment, and link, each of which is associated with either part of the digital document or with another annotation mark. In addition, these annotation marks can be repositioned and resized to fit within the display area available on the screen based on the display properties of the screen, thus supporting the natural flow of annotating the document in a freeform manner.

  • Publication number: 20070100851
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention combine the flexibility of the computer in segmenting, indexing, and retrieving data with the strengths of people in analyzing scenes. They provide a mechanism that allows a group of analyzers at distributed locations to collaborate in generating pieces of semantic information of a data stream, integrates these pieces into a summary representation that can be used for subsequent computation, and allows related hypotheses and information requests to be presented back to the analyzers. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention.
