  • Patent number: 5684986
Abstract: An embedded directory record and method are provided for maintaining directory information for compressed data on a direct access storage device (DASD). The embedded directory record includes a plurality of page entries, a plurality of exception region entries and a plurality of compression group statistics. Each page entry includes an allocated page length value and a number of used sectors value in the allocated page. The exception region entries include a page index and a bit map used for identifying exception sectors used. The compression group statistics include a total count of allocated sectors, a total count of the used sectors; and a total count of written pages. A starting page address for a requested page is identified beginning at a start of the page entries by summing the allocated page length values for each page up to the requested page to identify an offset value and combining the offset value with a predetermined logical block address.

  • Patent number: 5666560
Abstract: A data compression storage method and data compression hierarchical padding structure are provided for a direct access storage device (DASD) using fixed block architecture (FBA). A minimum page allocation defining a minimum number of sectors allocated for each logical compressed data page is selected. The DASD is segmented into at least one compression group. Each compression group has a fixed logical size and includes a selected number of DASD compressed data pages with an initial page allocation of a number of sectors. The initial page allocation is greater than or equal to the minimum page allocation. A minimum number of compressed data regions is allocated within each compression group. A selected number of additional compressed data regions including a plurality of sectors for padding is allocated within each compression group. The plurality of padding sectors are distributed between the compression pages. An exception region is allocated within each compression group.

  • Patent number: 4771647
Abstract: A countershaft transmission includes first and second directional clutches and first, second and third speed clutches of the hydraulically actuated, rotating disc type to provide three forward speeds and three reverse speeds for a track-type tractor or the like. Included is an input shaft with first and second gears connected to rotate therewith that define midplanes normal to the input shaft. The directional clutches and the speed clutches are located axially between the midplanes in radially aligned relationships and a plurality of other constantly meshing gears are used including at least one pair of gears located axially exteriorly of the midplanes for compactness and to promote speed reduction ratio flexibility. A second embodiment provides six forward speeds by adding a directional clutch and another gear within the same compact dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4074592
Abstract: A vehicle transmission couples a plurality of input driven planetary arrangements with a plurality of selectable direct drive gear reduction means. The plurality of input driven planetary arrangements include a reverse planetary gear arrangement and in the preferred embodiment two forward planetary gear arrangements. The two forward planetary gear arrangements, each of which includes a ring gear which may be stopped, share a common planet carrier which drives the selectable direct drive gear reduction means. The reverse planetary gear arrangement includes a planet carrier which may be stopped, thus an associated reverse ring gear rotates in an opposite direction relative the input shaft. The reverse ring gear is coupled to the common planet carrier of the forward planet section. The direct drive section includes three drive gears in the preferred embodiment rotatably mounted on a quill shaft driven by the common planet carrier and coaxially mounted about the input shaft.

  • Patent number: 4074581
Abstract: A vehicle transmission couples a planetary type reduction section and a multi range speed section by means of a directional drive section. The planetary reduction section provides two underway speed ranges for each speed and direction combination selected in the multi range speed section and directional drive section. The two speed ranges available in the planetary reduction section are obtained through a rotating clutch selectively operable to engage the planet carrier with the input shaft to drive an output sun gear interconnected with the directional drive section, and a brake to stop rotation of the planet carrier relative the input shaft to allow the output sun gear to be driven by planet gears mounted on the planet carrier. Coaxial arrangement of the directional drive section about the input shaft permits direct drive of a power takeoff coupling mounted on the input shaft and further allows mounting of an accessory drive gear on the input shaft.

  • Patent number: 4003675
Abstract: A mechanism for varying the position of a plurality of nozzle vanes in a gas turbine engine. The mechanism includes a single double-acting hydraulic actuating jack disposed between two bell cranks for simultaneously applying force to a ring gear at two diametrically opposed connection points. The single actuating jack applies equal and opposite forces to the diametrically opposed connection points on the ring gear and reduces distortion producing stresses therein. The ring gear simultaneously engages a plurality of individual gear segments rotatable with each individual nozzle vane in the engine. Movement of the single actuator jack causes balanced rotation of the ring gear and simultaneous rotation of the nozzle vanes.
