  • Patent number: 4863513
Abstract: An iron-based anti-wear sintered alloy member containing at least 1.5 weight % C, 0.5 to 3.5 weight % P, and one or both of Mo and W in an amount of 0.5 to 3.0 weight % in terms of Mo (the conversion rate of W being 0.5) in addition to iron and having a phosphatic film formed at sliding contact portions. In addition to the above-described elements, one or both of Ni and Cu may be incorporated in an amount of 0.5 to 5.0 weight % in terms of Ni (the conversion rate of Cu being 0.5), of 0.3 to less than 8.0 weight % of Cr may be incorporated, or one or both of Ni and Cu may be incorporated in an amount of 0.3 to 0.7 weight % in terms of Ni together with 0.3 to 0.7 weight % of Cr.

  • Patent number: 4732310
Abstract: A composite camshaft is formed by brazing a journal to a shaft. After a brazing material is fitted into an annular groove formed on the center of the inner peripheral surface of a shaft-receiving bore in the journal, the journal is fitted onto the shaft and the brazing material is heated until it melts. The molten brazing material consequently completely fills a clearance between the inner peripheral of the shaft-receiving bore in the journal and the outer peripheral surface of the shaft, ensuring that the journal and the shaft are firmly connected.

  • Patent number: 4665766
Abstract: A shaft-end constituent member (14) of a material which is different from that of a shaft (12) is firmly attached to one end of the shaft (12). The shaft-end constituent member (14) is provided with an axial projection (15) corresponding to a recess (13) formed in the outer peripheral surface of the shaft (12), and a joint bore (16) is formed in the projection (15) to receive a joint member (17). The joint member (17) enables the retention of a component (20) such as a pulley or the like, so that the component (20) does not rotate about the shaft (12).

  • Patent number: 4649011
Abstract: A hollow cam shaft of the type wherein lubricating oil is distributed to the cam portions includes a rod member positioned inside the shaft pipe member and spaced from the inner pipe surface by shaft end members and guide strips to form a reduced, annular volume to be filled with oil during engine start-up. The method of making the hollow cam shaft includes forming the rod member from a resinous material by injection molding, using a removable mold positioned in the pipe through-hole, and, in a preferred embodiment, flowing the resin through the mold cavity and into a recess located in the distal shaft end member, which recess has an enlarged portion for capturing the hardened resin rod end and facilitating mold removal.

  • Patent number: 4615310
Abstract: A hollow portion of a tubular shaft (1) contains an elastic filler element (4) which has projections (6) formed on the outer periphery thereof. A lubricating-oil passage is defined between the inner peripheral surface of the hollow portion of the shaft (1) and the outer peripheral surface of the filler element (4) by the projections (6) which are in close, resilient contact with the inner peripheral surface of the hollow portion. Since the lubricating-oil passage has a relatively small volume, lubricating oil quickly fills into the passages and is supplied to the sliding surfaces of the cams during the start up operations.

  • Patent number: 4612695
Abstract: The method of manufacturing a lightweight, low cost hollow cam shaft includes the steps of forming an integral journal portion in a hollow pipe member by inwardly deforming a portion of the pipe member, such as by coining or spinning, the outer surface of the deformed portion being the bearing surface. Annular grooves formed immediately adjacent the inwardly deformed portion allow residue from an optional finish-grinding operation to escape. Cam members having fitting holes are fixedly mounted on undeformed pipe portions, or on outwardly deformed pipe portions.

  • Patent number: 4595556
Abstract: A composite camshaft having a plurality of ferrous fitting members, such as cam lobes and journals, firmly bonded to a steel shaft by sintering in the presence of a liquid phase. The fitting members are fabricated as a green compact from metal powders and pre-sintered to axially shrink the compact by one-half a preselected allowance of shrinkage. Thereafter the pre-sintered fitting members are fitted on the shaft and sintered to axially shrink the compact by the remaining allowance of shrinkage and metallurgically join the shaft.
