Abstract: A comprehensive solution which introduces a blood transfusion recipient classification scheme and a method for recommending specific blood product units for transfusion candidates including those of complex cases, rare blood types and emergent situations for the achievement of: compatibility, safety and efficacy; prevention of alloimmunization and Hemolytic Transfusion Reactions; optimal patient to donor matching; and optimization of available red blood cell units distribution amongst recipients. This invention includes a method to quantify match results and measure outcomes of the decision-making processes. A donor phenotype classification scheme and a method to optimize the long-term storage of blood units are introduced.
