  • Patent number: 7894721
Abstract: An optical network system having a global controller capable of controlling all the elements of the network. The controller receives performance data from each optical network element and calculates a performance value for each channel transmitting through the system. The controller then isolates the channel with the minimum performance value and tests possible changes in network element parameters to find a change which would increase this performance value. Once such a change is found, it is implemented and the system is reoptimized.

  • Patent number: 6657983
Abstract: A method of allocating bandwidth for transmitting upstream cells from a CPE unit to a BTS. The CPE determines arrival time information associated with each cell and sends arrival time information associated with at least one cell to the BTS. The BTS allocates future bandwidth to the CPE as a function of the arrival time information received from the CPE. For example, the BTS estimates the number of cell arrivals occurring in the current scheduling period based on past cell arrival times. The BTS then sends information to the CPE in which the allocated future bandwidth is specified. Finally, the CPE groups a number of cells into a burst packet occupying the allocated bandwidth and sends the burst packet to the BTS. Rather than respond in a delayed manner to a bandwidth deficiency or surplus at an individual CPE unit, the BTS produces an estimate of a CPE unit's bandwidth demands, resulting in more efficient bandwidth utilization and reduced cell loss ratio.

  • Patent number: 6603958
Abstract: The invention provides a frequency control method and apparatus for efficiently controlling in a wireless system the carrier frequency of a received signal transmitted over a radio link to counteract carrier frequency drifts in the received signal and hence maintain link connectivity. In a preferred embodiment, the invention provides upstream and downstream carrier frequency control in a broadband wireless access (BWA) time division multiplex access (TDMA) system formed of a base transceiver station (BTS) and multiple customer premises equipment (CPE) units. At each of the CPE units, the CPE upstream carrier frequency is preemptively adjusted based on downstream carrier frequency measurements to counteract carrier frequency variations in the upstream carrier frequency. For downstream communications, the BTS periodically polls all active CPE units to obtain downstream frequency offset estimates, calculate a frequency correction offset and adjust the downstream carrier frequency accordingly.

  • Patent number: 6519449
Abstract: The invention provides a signal power control method and apparatus for a wireless system to control the power level of a received signal transmitted over a radio link so as to counteract transmission impairments caused by environment variations and maintain the reliability of the radio link. The signal power control of this invention serves to control the transmit power used for transmission and adjust the position of the receiver dynamic range so that the received signal can always be optimally received. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is incorporated in a broadband wireless access (BWA) time division multiplex access (TDMA) system to maintain the reliability of an upstream radio link connecting a base transceiver station (BTS) with multiple customer premises equipment (CPE) units.
