    Abstract: An orthosis comprises a cervical portion that holds a head in place relative to a thoracic portion worn by a wearer. The orthosis has an intermediate portion disposed intermediate the cervical and thoracic portions. The orthosis also has a first adjustment region that provides at least 15° of relative movement between the cervical and intermediate portions, and a second adjustment region that provides at least 15° of relative movement between the thoracic and intermediate portions.     Abstract: A cervical collar can be adjustable with respect to a wearer's head and neck, and include a back portion positionable posterior to a wearer's neck. The collar can also include a member that extends anteriorly relative to the back portion, and can have a mechanism adapted to reposition a prominence of the member superiorly, inferiorly, anteriorly, and posteriorly relative to the portion while the collar is installed on the wearer. A method of enforcing a lordotic curve in a wearer's cervical spine is also disclosed including installing a cervical collar on the wearer, adjusting the cervical collar to fit the wearer's head and neck, and positioning a member so that the member extends anteriorly with respect to the back portion to an extent that is independent of a tightness of the collar about the neck.

    Abstract: A body brace for a wearer has a combination of adjustment mechanisms and fasteners to help fit the body brace to a wearer. A wearer first fastens the body brace about his abdomen and lumbar regions to generally fit the body brace around the wearer's waist. The wearer then adjusts one set of adjustment mechanisms that adjust an upper and lower circumference of the brace to allow the brace to fit both straight and pear-shaped bodies. Lastly, the wearer adjusts a second set of adjustment mechanisms that tighten a rear panel of the body brace against a lumbar region of the wearer. Preferably, the adjustment mechanism that is used to tighten the rear panel is an advantaged adjustment mechanism to allow for fine-tuning and a snug fit.

    Abstract: A back brace has left, right and back panels that substantially overlap to form a tubular back brace when worn. Leverage multiples tightening force during tightening. After each successive tightening by the lever, retaining bands retain the back brace in position. Pressure spreading layers have a secondary adjustment mechanism comprising a plurality of notches extending inward from upper and lower edges, and at least one hole aligned with each of the plurality of notches. The back panel has a window overlying the sacrum. The orthopedist can observe the engagement of the back brace in this area through the window. A malleable bar is attached to the back panel adjacent the window so that the orthopedist can adjust the malleable bar for proper fit. After the initial fitting, including adjustment of the back panel over the sacrum, the back brace may be readily donned and doffed by the patient.

    Abstract: Massage pressure devices are fitted onto a chair which has a rocking back, either conventional rocking chair or an office chair with pivoted an spring-loaded back, so that massage is applied to the back of a person seated in and rocking the chair. The massage pressure devices are rollers or pads which are mounted so that the amount of massage pressure and the position of the massage pressure are adjustable in accordance with the user's desires. The massage pressure drive mechanism includes a reference to the base so that the massage pressure devices are driven up and down the chair back as the chair back rocks back and forth. In a conventional rocking chair, the truck carrying the massage pressure rollers is adjustable in both pressure of the devices against the back and the position thereof.

    Abstract: In its preferred embodiment, the back brace is formed of left, right and back panels which substantially overlap to form a tubular back brace when worn. The back panel has a window therethrough, which overlies the sacrum. The orthopedist can observe the engagement of the back brace in this area through the window. The left and right panels overlap the back panel at the sides and are adjustable attached so that gross circumferential adjustment can be made. When that adjustment is made and the back brace is donned, a repeatedly actuated tightening lever on one of the side panels engages a tightening strap on the other of the side panels.     Abstract: A canopy is formed of an oval flexible sheet of solar radiation and wind resistant material held in extended position by a resilient band and sized so that the band and sheet material are pulled into a saddle shape. Support for the canopy is provided by two flexible supports attached to the canopy at its edges and to a base structure, such as a wheel chair, stroller, patio rail or lawn chair. The supports are long enough so that the canopy can be adjusted to various positions above and alongside the occupant of the base structure for overhead and lateral shelter. The supports are nonresilient and are stiff enough to hold the canopy in the selected position into which it is placed.

    Abstract: An intubation device and a method of intubating a patient with an endotracheal tube is disclosed. The device comprises a housing and a flexible, tubular sheath having one end connected to the housing and a free end extending away from it. The sheath, which is adapted to fit within the endotracheal tube, also has a special light at the end of the sheath's free end for selectively providing illumination. In use, the sheath is inserted into the endotracheal tube until the light is at the end of the distal end of the tube. A clamp on the intubation device then clamps the endotracheal tube to the housing to prevent relative movement between the tube and the sheath. A tube stop is then slid along the sheath into abutting contact with the proximal end of the endotracheal tube to identify the location on the sheath corresponding to the proximal end of the tube. When the tube is properly positioned in the patient, the light will create a distinct glow visible to an observer in the area of the sternal notch.

The thorax is formed by a hollow body of plastic material, which is in air exchange relationship with the atmosphere and which has stiffening ribs which reproduce approximately human ribs. In that arrangement the number and size of the stiffening ribs are so selected that the compressibility and return force of the thorax correspond to those of a human thorax not only in regard to extent but also in terms of their nature and form, and thus provide a particularly good approximation to the behavior of a human thorax.

    Abstract: For securing a patient's head in a head immobilizer, a dual adhesive strap is provided which is designed to lay across and adhere to the patient's forehead and have each of its ends adhere to a spine board. The strap has a bottom side comprising a central region which comprises skin contact adhesive flanked by two regions which comprise board contact adhesive. The board contact adhesive is stronger than the skin contact adhesive, such that the strap stays adhered under various environmental conditions, and the skin of the patient's forehead is not injured by the skin contact adhesive. The strap and the adhesive regions are preferably large enough to accommodate many sizes of heads, spine boards, and head immobilizers. Preferably, a removable backing covers the adhesive side of the strap.

In a preferred embodiment, the support is provided by a plurality of load-bearing tabs extending from the top edge of the front portion of the collar.     Abstract: An aspirator for removing vomit and like matter from the mouth and throat. A bellows integral with a collection reservoir includes a handle grip reciprocable alternately to draw vomit into the reservoir from an attached catheter insertable into the throat, and vent air through an exhaust valve. The bellows-reservoir unit is detachably mounted to a frame which also includes a handle grip and springs. The grips are squeezed to draw in vomit, and released to permit the springs to collapse the bellows. The operation is one-handed, the device is portable, and the bellows-reservoir unit can be separated from the frame and discarded after use. A feature is a one-way inlet valve in the catheter to prevent vomit from draining back into the throat during aspirator operation.
