Publication number: 20190347394Abstract: Systems and methods are provided which allow for motion-based authentication of a user using magnified motion. Very small or imperceptible motions of a user may be captured and magnified to determine characteristics of the motions that may be used as a motion-based credential for user authentication. The motions, which may be very small and imperceptible to an observer, may be difficult for potential attackers to observe and copy, but may be useful when magnified.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 28, 2019Publication date: November 14, 2019Inventor: Geoffrey W. Chatterton

Patent number: 10445715Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for configuring a user device to provide a preferred payment method for payments. When a user carries their device into a store, the device may receive information from a beacon at the store that informs the device that the user is at the store. The user device may the use the information to determine which of several payment methods will provide a maximum benefit to the user if used for a payment at that store. The benefits to the user may include points, store rewards, miles, cash back rewards or other rewards associated with a particular payment method that, at a particular time or location provide more benefit to the user than other payment methods. The user device may be configured to provide the preferred payment method prior to a communication between the user device and a point of sale device of the store.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2017Date of Patent: October 15, 2019Assignee: PAYPAL, INC.Inventors: John Hastings Granbery, Geoffrey W. Chatterton

Publication number: 20190279200Abstract: There are provided systems and method for wireless beacon communications through magnetic card readers. A check-in at a merchant location may be completed using a beacon at the merchant location with a communication device. When a user wishes to pay for an item, the beacon may alert the user through their communication device that payment may be effectuated through the communication device. The communication device may communicate a payment token to the wireless beacon that identifies payment information for the user using a payment provider. The payment token may be encrypted, and the wireless beacon may decrypted the payment token prior to transmission to an accessory of a point of sale device, such as a magnetic card reader using magnetic field generation. This payment token may then be transmitted to a point of sale device, which may utilize a payment provider and/or a payment card issuer to effectuate payment.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 20, 2018Publication date: September 12, 2019Inventors: Satish Govindarajan, Geoffrey W. Chatterton

Patent number: 10255623Abstract: Systems and methods are provided which allow for the management of multiple beacons using a network-connected primary beacon in communication with the multiple beacons. The primary beacon may be in communication with the other beacons in the network using a low power wireless technology, such as Bluetooth® low energy (BLE). The primary beacon may receive updates and content from a server over a network to which the primary beacon is in communication, and then send the received updates and content to the other beacons. Moreover, the other beacons may periodically provide updates or collect information and provide this information to the primary beacon, which can then send the updates or collected information to the server for storage and/or analysis.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2015Date of Patent: April 9, 2019Assignee: PAYPAL, INC.Inventors: Geoffrey W. Chatterton, John Hastings Granbery

Publication number: 20190005485Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a payment application personalized for a merchant physical location include receiving a first customer location from a first customer device that is running a payment application. A first merchant physical location is then determined to be associated with the first customer location and, in response, first merchant physical location personalization information is retrieved. The first merchant physical location personalization information is then provided for display as a user interface on at least one personalized merchant physical location screen that is provided on the first customer device using the payment application. The at least one personalized merchant physical location screen is configured to send an instruction to the payment application provider device to make a payment from a first customer account associated with the first customer to a first merchant account associated with the first merchant physical location.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 30, 2018Publication date: January 3, 2019Inventors: Timothy C. Nichols, Geoffrey W. Chatterton, David Good, Ramaneek Khanna
