  • Patent number: 6117278
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for making high purity .alpha.-chloroxylenes. A composition is formed of about 15 to about 80 wt % of a xylene and about 20 to about 85 wt % of a solvent. The solvent can be toluene, ring halogenated toluene, benzotrichloride, ring halogenated benzotrichloride, benzotrifluoride, ring halogenated benzotrifluoride, .alpha.,.alpha.,.alpha.,.alpha.',.alpha.',.alpha.'-hexafluorometaxylene, .alpha.,.alpha.,.alpha.,.alpha.',.alpha.',.alpha.'-hexafluoroparaxylene, or a mixture thereof. The composition is heated to about 70 to about 160.degree. C. No base is present in the composition. Chlorine gas is sparged through the composition and chlorine free radicals are generated therein. The chlorine free radicals can be generated either with UV light or by means of a chlorine free radical initiator.

  • Patent number: 5981789
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of preparing an aromatic compound having the general formula ##STR1## where R is CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3, OC.sub.2 F.sub.5, CN, NCO, or COCl, m is 0, 1, or 2, n is 0, 1, or 2, q is 1 or 2, and q+m+n is an integer from 1 to 5. A vapor is prepared of a substrate having the general formula ##STR2## and a chlorinating agent. The mixture is reacted at a temperature above the boiling point of the substrate but below its decomposition temperature. The amount of chlorinating agent is about 0.5 to about 2 times the amount stoichiometrically required to replace the nitro groups on the substrate with chlorine. Unreacted substrate and partially reacted substrate are condensed from the product mixture and are recycled. The substrate is preferably in contact with the chlorinating agent before it is vaporized.

  • Patent number: 5840998
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of chlorinating a side chain of a aromatic or heterocyclic ether. The aromatic or heterocyclic ether is mixed with a fluorine-containing aliphatic solvent. The aromatic or heterocyclic ether is contacted with chlorine radical at an elevated temperature which results in its chlorination. The chlorinated product is preferably insoluble in the solvent and separates, forming two phases. The solvent phase can be recycled and reused.

  • Patent number: 5395370
Abstract: A medical technical compression implant (1) for the surgical repair of damage to the spine, especially in the cervical region, includes two clamp jaws (3, 4), which are directed toward each other, are hook-shaped, are connected by a threaded spindle (2), and can be compressed while reducing the distance (B) between them. A wrench profile (9) for attaching a rotating tool in an interlocking manner is arranged at the threaded spindle (2) between two threaded sections (7, 8) with right-hand threads and left-hand threads, respectively. Both the clamp jaws (3, 4) have threaded nuts (5, 6), which are pivotably mounted from bodies, with diametrical threaded bores for screwing on the threaded sections (7, 8). The threaded nuts are mounted in cylindrical transverse bores of the clamp jaws (3, 4). The bore walls (21) are provided with diametrical openings (22, 23) for passing through the threaded sections (7, 8) of the threaded spindle (2).

  • Patent number: 5380324
Abstract: An implant for the spinal column for fixing the vertebrae, especially the cervical vertebra, on the anterior side, i.e., on the side of the esophagus, wherein the implant has screw holes for screwing together with the vertebra and has a multi-component design, and has at least two mounting plates, which are provided with at least two screw holes. The mounting plates are connected by an articulated bearing each to a spindle having right-hand and left-hand, self-locking threads with an angular shaft piece for actuating the spindle, wherein the mounting plates have a ribbed area on the side facing the vertebral bone W. The articulated bearing includes a bearing bush extending outwardly from each mounting plate and a bearing pin which has a threaded hole for engaging the spindle. The bushing has a hole allowing the spindle to pass through the bearing bush wherein pin is moveable within the bearing bush.
