Abstract: Azo dyes of the formula ##STR1## where the ring A may be benzofused,n is 0 or 1, and R.sup.1 -R.sup.8 are as defined,as pH-dependent markers for hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons containing the above-mentioned azo dyes, and a method for detecting these azo dyes in hydrocarbons.

Abstract: Azo dyes useful for marking mineral oils have the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy,R.sup.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl which may be substituted by hydroxyl and interrupted by from 1 to 3 oxygen atoms,R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl which may be substituted by hydroxyl and interrupted by from 1 to 3 oxygen atoms, andX is cyano or substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxycarbonyl,with the proviso that the molecule contains at least one hydroxyalkyl radical.

Abstract: Acetalized azo dyes are prepared by diazotizing an amine, coupling with a hydroxyalkyl-containing coupling component and subsequently reacting with a vinyl ether in a process which comprises carrying out the coupling reaction in a two-phase reaction mixture comprising water and an aromatic hydrocarbon, subsequently separating off the aqueous phase and reacting the azo dye, which is present in the organic phase, without intermediate isolation, with a vinyl ether in the presence of a polybasic carboxylic acid as catalyst.

Abstract: Liquid dye preparations useful for making color ribbons or ballpoint pen pastes contain at least one dye of the formula ##STR1## where X is hydroxyl, amino or C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 -monoalkylamino, R.sup.1 and R.sup.4 are each a carboxylate group or substituted or unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 -alkoxy, R.sup.2 and R.sup.5 are each hydrogen, nitro or chlorine, and R.sup.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.13 -alkyl, plus as solvent at least one product selected from the group consisting of benzyl alcohol, tridecanol, isotridecanol, glycol ethers, olein, dialkyl phthalates, chloroalkanes, alkanes disubstituted by phenyl, dialkylnaphthalenes and partly hydrogenated terphenyl.

Abstract: Polyazo dyes useful for dyeing leather in the free form or as copper, chromium, iron, cobalt or nickel complexes have the formula ##STR1## where m is 0, 1 or 2, n is 0 or 1, p is from 1 to 2, q is from 0 to 1, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, X, Y and the ring A are each as defined, and may be prepared from aniline derivatives of the formula ##STR2## where m is 0, 1, or 2, n is 0 or 1, and X, R.sup.1, R.sub.2 and R.sup.3 are each as defined.

Abstract: Compounds which in the form of the free acid are of the general formula I ##STR1## where A is a radical of the formula ##STR2## the radicals Y independently of one another are each hydroxyl or amino, X is hydrogen, hydroxysulfonyl or a radical of the formulaD--N.dbd.N--,R is a radical of 1-aminonaphthalene-4-, -5-, -6-, -7-or -8-monosulfonic acid or of 1-aminonaphthalene-3-6,-, -3,7-, -3,8-, -4,7- or -4,8-disulfonic acid, or a Cu, Fe, Ni, Co, Mn or Cr complex thereof, and D is phenyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by methyl, methoxy,ethoxy, nitro, chlorine, bromine or sulfo, or is sulfo-substituted naphthyl. These compounds are preferably used for dyeing leather.

Abstract: Compounds containing sulfonic acid groups and of the general formula I ##STR1## where D.sup.1 is a radical of a diazo component, X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 independently of one another are each hydroxyl or unsubstituted or substituted amino, Y is hydrogen, chlorine, methyl, hydroxysulfonyl or a radical of the formulaD.sup.3 --N.dbd.N--and D.sup.2 is a radical of the formula ##STR2## D.sup.3 is a radical of a diazo component from the aniline or aminonaphthalene series, K is a radical of a coupling component from the benzene or naphthalene series, and the rings in the coupling component D.sup.2 may furthermore be substituted by chlorine, methyl, methoxy, hydroxysulfonyl, aminosulfonyl, hydroxyl or acylamino, and metal complexes of such compounds, give very fast, brown dyeings, particularly on leather.

Abstract: Compounds of the general formula I ##STR1## where R is hydroxyl or unsubstituted or substituted amino, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, X.sup.1 and Y.sup.1 independently of one another are each a carboxylic acid ester or ether group and X.sup.2 and Y.sup.2 independently of one another are each hydrogen, nitro or chlorine, are very useful for coloring petroleum products, solvents and engine fuel additives.

Abstract: Trisazo dyes containing sulfo groups and having the formula: ##STR1## which for the most part give black colorations on paper and particularly on leather and are therefore especially useful as leather dyes.

Abstract: Acid monoazo dyes of the formula ##STR1## in which X is hydrogen, chloro, bromo, nitro, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, methoxy, ethoxy or C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkanoylamino and K is a radical of a coupling compound as defined below. The dyes are suitable for dyeing natural or synthetic polyamides giving colorations with very good fastness properties.
