  • Publication number: 20050119821
Abstract: An engine protection system and protocol is implemented within an electronic control module. Various engine parameters, such as engine coolant level, coolant temperature, transmission fluid temperature, and engine oil pressure are monitored and compared to limit values to determine if a fault condition exists as to one or more of the parameters. The engine protection system includes visual and audible signals responsive to the parameters. An engine disabling mechanism is operative when any of the aforementioned parameters exceed predetermined limits for a predeterminable period. The electronic control module contains a memory function for recording the fault parameters as well as other identifying information. The electronic control module also includes an engine idle limiter feature. The engine disabling means is operative when the vehicle idling duration exceeds a second predeterminable period.

  • Patent number: 6685637
Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is described which enables the system operator to change the language of the graphical user interface without the need to restart the system. The software build for text, dialog boxes, symbols, icons, and other language-specific information contains this display information in multiple languages. By accessing a setup menu or other selection screen the user can change to one of the other languages stored on the system, preferably including all language-specific features. In the describe embodiments this change many be implemented without the need to reboot the system. In one embodiment the user has the ability to select multiple languages for different functions such as one language for system operation and another language for diagnostic reports.

  • Patent number: 6180054
Abstract: A ceramic hot-gas candle filter having a porous support of filament-wound oxide ceramic yarn at least partially surrounded by a porous refractory oxide ceramic matrix, and a membrane layer on at least one surface thereof. The membrane layer may be on the outer surface, the inner surface, or both the outer and inner surface of the porous support. The membrane layer may be formed of an ordered arrangement of circularly wound, continuous filament oxide ceramic yarn, a ceramic filler material which is less permeable than the filament-wound support structure, or some combination of continuous filament and filler material. A particularly effective membrane layer features circularly wound filament with gaps intentionally placed between adjacent windings, and a filler material of ceramic particulates uniformly distributed throughout the gap region. The filter can withstand thermal cycling during backpulse cleaning and is resistant to chemical degradation at high temperatures.

  • Patent number: 6109404
Abstract: A method of forming lightweight luggage and luggage formed thereby are provided. The method preferably includes providing an outer frame body. The outer frame body is preferably formed of a foam material and has a pair of spaced-apart, end frame body members and a pair of spaced-apart, side frame body members. Each of the spaced-apart end frame body members is connected to each of the spaced-apart side frame body members along common side peripheries thereof so that the pair of end frame body members and the pair of side frame body members define outer peripheries of a body cavity. Each of the frame body members has a first predetermined width and a first predetermined length. The method also includes positioning a first frame support member to abuttingly contact an inner surface of a first of the pair of end frame body members and positioning a second frame support member to abuttingly contact an inner surface of a second of the pair of end frame body members.

  • Patent number: 6107968
Abstract: A communication terminal including a communication unit, a longitudinal antenna enclosed in a radome, and a pivot connecting the antenna to the unit for pivoting about an axis with an RF connection to the unit. The unit is in a box-shaped enclosure having a front face with a keypad and connected to a rear face by top and bottom faces, and two side faces. One of the unit front and rear faces is non-planar from top to bottom with the spacing between the front and rear faces varying from top to bottom. The spacing between the radome front and rear faces varies to substantially match the varied spacing between the unit front and rear faces so that the radome and unit front and rear faces define a uniform profile when the radome is adjacent one unit side face. The unit top face lies on one side of a first plane and at least one unit side face lies on one side of a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.

  • Patent number: 5518932
Abstract: The process of preparing higher aluminum alkyls by olefin chain growth on alkyl aluminum is improved by using on-line flow-through calorimetry to determine the aluminum concentration of a process stream, such as the aluminum alkyl feed stream, by reacting a sample portion of the process stream with a molar excess of alcohol and measuring the change in temperature. The aluminum concentration of the stream can then be adjusted as required to maintain it within a selected range.

  • Patent number: 5393981
Abstract: An apparatus for the simultaneous, selective detection of neutrons and X or gamma photons including a photomultiplier, a first scintillator sensitive to the neutrons and a second scintillator sensitive to the x or gamma photons. The apparatus also includes an attenuating light guide (situated between the first and second scintillators) for guiding the photons produced by the first scintillator to the photomultiplier and for attenuating the radiation associated with these photons. The attenuating light guide facilitates the separation of the energy bands associated with each of the first scintillator, the second scintillator and the background noise of the photomultiplier. By separating energy bands, detection of each radiation element is less complex. The apparatus also includes a neutron filter (situated between the attenuating light guide and the second scintillator) which functions to reduce the occurrence of neutrons interacting with the second scintillator, thus facilitating energy band separation.

  • Patent number: 5030436
Abstract: Contaminants in spent nitric-sulfuric nitration acid can be removed by mixing the spent acid with urea and heating to 75.degree.-150.degree. C. Off-gas from the spent acid/urea reaction is passed through a Group IB, VB, VIB or VIII metal containing catalyst to decompose nitrous oxides and the so-treated off-gas is contacted with spent acid, denitrated spent acid, or fresh sulfuric acid, and optionally air (i.e. oxygen), to absorb oxides of nitrogen. The spent acid scrubbing fluid is then subjected to the same process for removing contaminants.

  • Patent number: 4981102
Abstract: A reactor having a heated liner for producing silicon by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and means for supplying a gas stream in the turbulent flow region. A gas stream including a silicon-containing compound is passed through a deposition chamber at turbulent flow rates for deposition of silicon on a non-reactive substrate liner heated above the decomposition temperature of the silicon-containing compound. Optionally, the liner is removable from the reactor for separation of deposited metal. Also optionally, the temperature of the liner in situ may be raised above the melting point of the deposited metal for melt out and recovery.

  • Patent number: 4085501
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for making integrated optical circuits. A waveguide in the form of a thin layer of dielectric material is modified as to its coherent radiation transmitting properties by electron beam impingement thereon so as to modulate coherent radiation by mode conversion and mode guiding. Preferably the layer is of thermoplastic material which is locally charged by the electron beam and is heated to allow corresponding deformation due to the forces generated by the localized charging. When cooled, the deformations are frozen in but may be erased by subsequent reheating whereafter the deformation process may be repeated, thus allowing reuse of the device for a different optical circuit, or allowing its modification to form a different optical circuit.

  • Patent number: T966001
Abstract: a method for traversing a plurality of strands between two spaced rows of strand-restraining elements moving together in the same direction in substantially the same plane to form a web is implemented by a plurality of strand transfer members moving in a single closed path spanning the rows of strand-restraining elements so that the members pass between strand-restraining elements on one of the rows and above them on the other row. There is a means provided for moving each strand back and forth across the path into engagement with the strand transfer members and a means for disengaging each strand from each strand transfer member beyond the other row and depositing it as a loop around at least one of the strand-restraining elements.
