  • Patent number: 8961128
Abstract: An exemplary center housing rotating assembly includes a turbine wheel; a compressor wheel; a center housing (510) that includes a through bore (515), extending from a compressor end to a turbine end along a bore axis; a bearing assembly (530) positioned in the bore where the bearing assembly includes an outer race (532) that includes keyways (535, 535?) extending from an axial end, the keyways radially inset from an outer diameter of the outer race; and a plate (570) attached to the center housing where the plate includes extending keys (578, 578?), each of the keys (578, 578?) being received by a respective one of the keyways (535, 535?) to restrict rotation of the bearing assembly in the bore. Various other exemplary devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8480357
Abstract: A variable geometry turbocharger assembly comprises a unison ring which rotates about a longitudinal axis defined by a shaft on which a turbine wheel and compressor wheel are attached in order to pivot a plurality of vanes and thereby control a flow of exhaust gas to the turbine wheel. The unison ring rotates on at least one guide pin which is secured to the turbocharger. The guide pins may be press-fit into apertures in a center housing at an outer pilot surface. In other embodiments the guide pins may be press-fit into a different part of the turbocharger such as a nozzle ring. The guide pins may each have a wear surface which defines a circumferential radius of curvature which is substantially equal to a circumferential radius of curvature of a radially inner surface of the unison ring.

  • Patent number: 6193463
Abstract: A die cast compressor housing includes an outer shell having a partial outer circumferencial volute wall portion and a projection surrounding the circumference of an aperture in the shell that mates with an insert having a first portion with a substantially cylindrical outer wall that is received in the aperture in the outer shell and includes an air inlet. The insert has a second portion extending radially outwardly and including a mating projection for engagement with the outer shell projection to form an inner circumferencial volute wall portion. A backplate has a third projection adjacent its outer circumference that is received in a relief in the outer shell and completes the outer circumferncial volute wall portion.

  • Patent number: 5890881
Abstract: A pressure balanced turbocharger rotating seal is provided by two piston rings mounted on the shaft of the turbocharger, one of the rings engaging a circumferential surface of the shaft bore in the center housing and the second ring engaging a circumferential surface of the shaft bore in the turbine wheel shroud, with a passage for introducing pressurizing gas intermediate the two rings, the passage including a circumferential channel in the inner face of the turbine wheel shroud, and a compression seal engaged between the center housing and turbine wheel shroud outboard of the channel.

  • Patent number: 5076060
Abstract: A hydraulic assisted turbocharger provides charge air to the intake manifold of a vehicle internal combustion engine. The hydraulic assist can be selectively turned on by the vehicle operator when the vehicle is stopped or is traveling at a low speed so that charge air can be supplied to the engine immediately upon a subsequent acceleration.

  • Patent number: 4969332
Abstract: A controller for a three-wheel turbocharger is shown for receiving input parameters including: throttle or rack position, manifold absolute pressure, airflow (either mass or volume), and engine RPM. The controller may also use an accumulator. The operating parameters are used by the controller to control the amount of hydraulic fluid applied to the third hydraulic turbine wheel of the turbocharger through various operational modes including: pump bypass, power transfer, lugging or override, and accumulator charging modes. The controller is designed so that power transfer may be overridden when engine load sensed by manifold absolute pressure or airflow or throttle position is reduced.
