Abstract: Novel phosphonium salts of N-phosphonomethylglycine are disclosed herein, having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl benzyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl and substituted benzyl wherein said substituents are independently selected from halogen, lower alkoxy, and lower alkyl; provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, or R.sup.4 is benzyl, substituted benzyl, or substituted phenyl. The compounds are useful as herbicides and plant growth regulants.

The compounds are useful in regulating the natural growth or development of plants and as herbicides.
