  • Patent number: 7875664
Abstract: This invention relates to a composition comprising, consisting of or alternatively consisting essentially of a stabilized furfural or glycol ester of a vegetable oil fatty acid and an antioxidant such as butylated hydroxy toluene. This invention also relates to latex film-forming compositions containing stabilized furfural or glycol esters, such as a stabilized propylene glycol monoester (PGME) mixture. This invention is also directed to methods of stabilizing furfural or glycol esters of a vegetable fatty acid by contacting the esters with an antioxidant such as butylated hydroxy toluene. This invention also includes methods of preparing film-forming compositions comprising a stabilized furfural or glycol ester, such as the stabilized PGME mixture disclosed herein.

  • Publication number: 20080103340
Abstract: A biobased replacement for propylene glycol and ethylene glycol derived from petrochemical sources is presented. The product mixture from the hydrogenolysis of certain polyols from biobased renewable resources may replace propylene glycol and ethylene glycol products from petrochemical sources. Applications and methods of the biobased hydrogenolysis product mixture are disclosed. The compositions and methods provide a feedstock for industrial use which has a 13C/12C isotope ratio characteristic of bioderived material.

  • Patent number: 7126018
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process of producing polyol esters possessing desirable composition and color. Preferably, such a process does not require molecular distillations or decoloration steps to yield a light-colored polyol ester composition. Materials that are dark in color are often produced during the esterification of polyols with vegetable oil fatty acids. It has been discovered that the present process yields the desired ester products that are light in color. The present process comprises an esterification of a polyol, such as propylene glycol, and a fatty acid ester, such as a vegetable oil fatty acid methyl ester, in the presence of a catalyst and borohydride, wherein a polyol ester having a Lovibond color below about 0.6 Red and below about 1.5 Yellow is produced.

  • Patent number: 6924333
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a latex paint composition comprising polyunsaturated fatty acid containing additives derived from vegetable oils. In preferred embodiments, traditional water soluble additives such as thickeners, surfactants and dispersants are replaced with polyunsaturated fatty acid derivatives, adducts or polyunsaturated fatty acid containing polymers. The polyunsaturated fatty acid containing additives reduce or eliminate the need for traditional water soluble additives that lower the water resistance of the dry paint film. Additionally, the polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties are capable of oxidative crosslinking during the curing process, forming a dry paint film that is more durable and water-resistant than traditional latex paint compositions.
