Abstract: A processor-implemented method of placing telephone calls includes determining if a phone call initiated to a phone number has connected. If the phone call did not connect, then the processor determines if the phone number has an associated replace code for any subset of the phone number. If a replace code is determined to exist, then the processor replaces the subset of the phone number with the corresponding replace code to obtain a replace code number and initiates a phone call to the replace code number.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, by which to facilitate selection of a WLAN through which a mobile node communicates. Selection takes into account the geographic positioning of the mobile node. The mobile node ascertains its geographic positioning by monitoring cellular-positioning signals. And, availability of WLANs through which to communicate is ascertained by detecting signals broadcast by the WLANs.

Abstract: A charger unit for an electronic device that includes a housing, a plurality of charging contacts provided on the housing, and a recess provided in the housing, preferably on a rear face thereof. A plug having a plurality of prongs may be selectively attached to and detached from the housing for electrically connecting the charger unit to a source of charging current. When attached to the housing, one or more of the prongs of the plug are electrically connected to a respective one of the charging contacts. In addition, a plurality of storage sockets are provided in the housing within the recess. Each of the storage sockets are adapted to receive and hold therein a respective one of the prongs of the plug to enable the plug to be safely and securely stored when not in use.

Abstract: A system and method for facilitating determination of mode and configuration of a wireless user equipment (UE) device operable with a plurality of radio access technologies (RATs) in a radio network environment. In one exemplary embodiment, the wireless UE device is operable to determine its geographic area location. A logic module of the wireless UE device is adapted for interrogating a location database having time-stamped location information to determine which RATs have coverage in the geographic area location. Another logic module is adapted for interrogating a user schedule database. Responsive to the interrogation of the location and user schedule databases, the wireless UE device's mode of operation is configured accordingly.

Abstract: An electronic device, including at least one software component and at least one hardware component, generates a hash value by performing a hashing algorithm on an identifier of the at least one software component and an identifier of the at least one hardware component. The electronic device uses this generated hash value to determine whether software used by the electronic device for accessing a wireless network remains unmodified.

Abstract: A switchable configuration system and method for switchably configuring a handset between private wireless network and cellular modes is provided. The switchable configuration system comprises a cellular module adapted to operate the handset in a cellular mode, a private wireless network module adapted to operate the handset in a private wireless network mode, and a configuration module adapted to determine which mode to configuring the handset. The method comprises the steps of determining if private wireless network coverage is available, in response to determining that private wireless network coverage is available selecting the private wireless network mode, and in response to determining that private wireless network coverage is not available selecting the cellular mode.

Abstract: An improved handheld electronic device and an improved method facilitate the entry of data when the data is to be of a particular arrangement of alphabetic (A) and/or numeric (N) and/or other characters. In the depicted exemplary embodiment, the handheld electronic device includes a user interface that facilitates the entry of postal codes, zip codes, and the like that vary from country to country by processing key inputs according to a data format that has been selected on the basis of its correspondence with a country. In the example of address data, the handheld electronic device detects the entry of country-specific data, such as the name of the country or one of its geographic regions, and selects a corresponding data format for processing keystrokes during entry of postal codes, zip codes, or other codes.

Abstract: A method of facilitating the entry of information for a contact to be stored by an address book application of a handheld electronic device, wherein the information is entered into a plurality of fields. The method includes receiving first information in a first one of the fields, and determining whether the first information can be used to determine second information for entry in one of the fields. If it is determined that the first information can be used to determine the second information, the method includes entering the second information in either the first one of the fields or another one of the fields. Also, a handheld electronic device having one or more routines that are adapted to implement the method described above.

Abstract: A relay site associated with a wireless network can send messages between mobile devices associated with the wireless network without having to transmit the messages to a host system. The messages include PIN messages and each of the mobile devices has a PIN address. The relay site includes a relay server for controlling the operation of the relay site, and sending the PIN messages between the mobile devices. The relay site also includes a relay data store having PIN information for users associated with the mobile devices. The relay server can access the relay data store to allow users that use the mobile devices to query the relay data store for PIN information of other users.

The UE device then authenticates with at least one GANC node for obtaining access service to a PLMN coupled thereto.
