Patent number: 4382356Abstract: A rotary-type lawnmower having unique non-metallic cutting elements carried on a rotating disc-like head with a smooth rim and lower exposed surface without significant projections or recesses capable of inflicting injury to human parts. The lawnmower produces a smooth and even cut equal to rotary metal-blade machines. The cutting elements are tapered pins extruded from flexible polymeric material such as Nylon.RTM. polymer. Each cutting pin has a first portion providing supporting surfaces and an enlargement for securing the pin into the head. The cutting pins extend from the head in a tapered free-traveling end portion to a cutting end located at a cutting plane adjacent the ground's surface. The cutting pins are slidably inserted and removed from the disc.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1981Date of Patent: May 10, 1983Assignee: Emerson Electric Co.Inventors: George C. Ballas, Sr., Albert W. Patent number: 4282652Abstract: An improved apparatus for cutting vegetation, comprising a motor and a rotating cutting head mounted at the ends of a support tube. One or more flexible non-metallic lines extend into a cutting plane from the cutting head. Unique first and second tubular handle members carrying cylindrical handgrips at their free ends are secured by a clamp to a straight portion in the support tube. These handle members have straight and curved portions arranged in combination so that the handgrips reside in a common horizon and with substantially the same angular displacement at the user's hands with the cutting head positioned directly in front of the user's body. With this improved apparatus the user has a comfortable stance with the cutting head before him and can make equal left and right swings without any undue strain or effort during vegetation cutting.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1977Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Emerson Electric Co.Inventor: George C. Patent number: 4177561Abstract: An improved cutting assembly for rotary lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers or the like, including a body member arranged for rotating about an axis normal with the cutting plane. At least two cutting lines are attached to the body member on a compound spool for rotation therewith in the cutting plane. The invention includes means for detachably securing the lines to the body member and for storing a supply of the line on the spool so that the line may be paid out as the working portions of the line become shortened through wear. The cutting lines are preferably nonmetallic so as to reduce the hazardous condition which would otherwise be present for the operator and still provide an apparatus which will cut with great efficiency and safety.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1977Date of Patent: December 11, 1979Assignee: Weed Eater, Inc.Inventor: George C. Ballas

Patent number: 4112653Abstract: A rotary-type lawn mower is provided with cutting means comprised of a rotatable disc-like member having a plurality of flexible non-metallic cords projecting radially from its perimeter. The disc-like member is rotated within the cutting plane by a suitable power source such as a conventional gasoline-driven engine, and at a velocity such that the projecting cords function to sever the grass in a substantially conventional manner. The cords are therefore of a length and diameter which are functionally related to effective cutting and are mounted within the disc-like member in brackets formed to support the cords against vertical as well as lateral deflection resulting from contact with the grass sought to be cut.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1976Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: Weed Eater, Inc.Inventors: George C. Ballas, Albert W. Mitchell

Patent number: 4104797Abstract: Apparatus for cutting, trimming, and edging vegetation, and the like, is provided with a rotatable disc-like head having a plurality of string-like members removably attached thereto and extending from its periphery. When the head is rotated, the strings will extend therefrom so as to cut adjacent vegetation in a flail-like manner. Snubber means are provided to arcuately deform the string in order to secure the string within the head.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1976Date of Patent: August 8, 1978Assignee: Weed Eater, Inc.Inventor: George C. Patent number: 4077333Abstract: An adjustable table is provided for use with a hospital bed and which allows a person reclining in the bed to easily change the angle of inclination of the table surface. The planar member is rotatably connected at one end to and extended horizontally outward from a vertical support member by means of frictionally engaged gripping elements. Lifting up on the free end of the planar member disengages the gripping elements whereby the planar member can thereafter be freely tilted or rotated about its longitudinal axis to a selected angle of inclination. Lowering the free end of the planar member to its original position re-engages the gripping elements to fix the planar member at the selected angle of inclination.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1977Date of Patent: March 7, 1978Inventor: George C. Ballas

Patent number: 4054992Abstract: Apparatus is provided for cutting vegetation with a flexible non-metallic string-like member in the manner of a flail. A circular body with one or more peripheral apertures is concentrically mounted on the shaft of an electric motor for rotation in a cutting plane, and a section of non-metallic line is interconnected with the circular body member and passed through the peripheral aperture to form the flail. The line may be press-fitted into one or more grooves which may further communicate with apertures or windows in the rim of the circular body. Alternatively, the line may be either a single section of line, or it may be two separate sections of line.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1975Date of Patent: October 25, 1977Assignee: Weed Eater, Inc.Inventors: George C.
