  • Patent number: 4230184
Abstract: Circulating oil used for removal of sulfur in sour gas wells is contacted with an aqueous solution of a lower polysulfide of an alkali metal or ammonia to form a higher polysulfide of the alkali metal or ammonia, and the oil is separated from the higher polysulfide. The higher polysulfide is converted to lower polysulfide by precipitating part of the sulfur contained therein, and the lower polysulfide is recycled for oil desulfurization.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 1, 1978
Date of Patent: October 28, 1980
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4164507
Abstract: A process is described for separating salt (sodium chloride) from the polyglyceride-containing organic phase of the heavy ends waste or glycerine foots still bottoms obtained in conventional manufacture of glycerine via hydrolysis of epichlorohydrin or glycerol dichlorohydrins. In this process, the heavy ends wastes made up primarily of salt and polyclycerides and containing less than about 6% by weight water are treated at elevated temperatures with sufficient amounts of n-butanol to bring about precipitation of the salt followed by separation of the n-butanol-containing liquid phase substantially free of salt from the precipitated salt, cooling of the separated liquid phase to a temperature at which the n-butanol phase separates from the substantially salt-free polyglyceride phase without further salt precipitation and recovery of the n-butanol from the phase-separated polyglyceride phase.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: August 14, 1979
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: George C. Blytas, Carl H. Deal
  • Patent number: 4116820
Abstract: A process is disclosed for demetallizing heavy hydrocarbon oils, by contacting the oil at elevated temperature with acidified active carbon. The process is particularly useful as a pretreatment of the heavy hydrocarbons for subsequent catalytic processes which are impared by metals such as nickel and vanadium.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 29, 1977
Date of Patent: September 26, 1978
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4102388
Abstract: Heat energy, preferably from a low grade energy source, is concentrated and transferred to another medium by a multi-zone steam absorption procedure.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 26, 1977
Date of Patent: July 25, 1978
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4094355
Abstract: Process for recovery of heat characterized by the concentration of heat from a heat source and transfer of the heat to raise the temperature of a heat receiving medium above that of the heat source.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 23, 1976
Date of Patent: June 13, 1978
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4048061
Abstract: A process is disclosed for reducing the level of compounds of certain metals from hydrocarbon liquids by contacting said metal compound-bearing hydrocarbon with acidified active carbon. The process is particularly useful for preferentially removing organo lead compounds from gasolines at mild conditions, with only small removal of organo manganese antiknock compounds such as methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl which may be present.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 5, 1976
Date of Patent: September 13, 1977
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4036944
Abstract: A hydrogen sorbent composition comprising a lanthanum pentanickel sorbent and a thermoplastic elastomer binder is disclosed. Also disclosed is the use of the composition in storing hydrogen and in the purification of hydrogen-containing streams.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 17, 1976
Date of Patent: July 19, 1977
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: George C. Blytas
  • Patent number: 4024400
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for monitoring metals concentration in fluid streams, and particularly for detecting rapid changes in metal concentrations in hydrocarbon streams.
