  • Patent number: 5383776
Abstract: Apparatus for analysis of defects in polymerization reactor output, such as for gels in polyester polymer. The apparatus includes a tape forming unit, a tape analysis unit, and an image analysis computer. A sample of polymerization reactor output is converted to a tape form by compression between nip rolls and wound onto a reel. The tape reel is transferred to the tape analysis unit and the tape is threaded through an inspection zone to a takeup reel. A polyester tape is illuminated with ultraviolet light at the inspection zone and a camera captures images of gel fluorescence caused by the ultraviolet light. Interference filters are provided to attenuate background light. The signal generated by the camera is sent to an image analysis computer for determination of the total number of gels in preselected size ranges, the total area of the gels, and a defect ratio, which is defined as the total gel area divided by the area of the tape selected.

  • Patent number: 4699606
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting and/or controlling tension of a moving web, for example, a filamentary tow, in a preselected zone of a longitudinal path traversed by the moving web. A sensing roller is journally supported by roller support structure, the latter having an opposing pair of deflection arms each of which is defined by edges which diverge from one another between inner supported and outer unsupported ends of the arms so that a region of reduced width (as measured in the general longitudinal direction of the web) is provided near each inner supported end. A reaction force which is indicative of the web's tension will thus be exerted against the sensing roller and transferred to the roller support structure so as to responsively cause the deflection arms to be resiliently flexed in the general direction of the reaction force.

  • Patent number: 4561580
Abstract: A tension measuring apparatus measures the tension in a tow band being advanced under tension. The apparatus includes a sensing roll which is carried by a pair of torsion bars which carry strain gages. The apparatus occupies little space while defining relatively long moment arms for the torsion bars, so as to be highly sensitive, yet compact in design. The sensing roll can be swung between operative and inoperative positions.
