  • Patent number: 5753996
Abstract: A gas discharge lamp has opposed end caps for enclosing the sealed end of the glass envelope. One of the end caps is provided with contact pins, and the other end cap is provided with a handle portion. The electrode adjacent the handled end cap is provided with an extended end portion that is mechanically connected to the handle end cap. In the event the handle end cap is loosened or becomes unbonded from the glass envelope, the handled end cap remains mechanically linked to the lamp so that removal or replacement of the lamp can be facilitated by applying a pulling force on the handled end cap.

  • Patent number: 5557112
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp having multiple zones with different ultraviolet radiation characteristics along its length has a tube with a first fluorescent coating for producing ultraviolet radiation of substantially uniform intensity extending over a first finite length of the tube adjacent one end. A second fluorescent coating extending over a second finite length of the tube adjacent its other end thereof produces ultraviolet radiation of a substantially uniform intensity and having radiation characteristics which are different from those produced in the first finite length. Generally, the UVB intensity and UVB/UVA ratio will be increased. This lamp is ideally suited for use in tanning chambers to provide uniform tanning by providing a higher intensity and a higher UVB/UVA ratio for radiation in the area of the head.

  • Patent number: 5552664
Abstract: A fluorescent lamp having a logo, design or graphic information formed thereon. The glass envelope of the lamp is provided internally thereof with a coating of pigmented layer superimposed with a layer of a reflective material and one or more layers of a fluorescent material to generate the desired colored light when the lamp is energized. The logo or design is laser engraved onto the glass envelope of the lamp is a manner to ablate the respective layers of material wherever the laser beam engages the glass envelope. The arrangement is such that when the lamp is energized, the logo or design will be illuminated in the color of the light generated by the fluorescent material associated with the logo or design. In one form of the invention, multiple color light is generated by layering multiple coatings of fluorescent material internally of a lamp wherein each layer of fluorescent material will generate light of different colors.

  • Patent number: 5422487
Abstract: A waste water purification system with complementary interlocking germicidal lamp and socket construction to prevent unintentional disconnection of the lamps. This is attained by providing the germicidal lamps with locking contact pins arranged to be latched and locked to its complementary socket by providing the socket with keyhole slots for receiving the contact pins and associated spring biased displaceable contacts to maintain electric contact between the lamp and its socket in the assembled position. In one form of the invention, the contact pins of the lamps are longitudinally offset and spaced apart to prohibit arcing between the contact pins of the respective lamp electrodes. Other embodiments of the disclosure effect the interlocking of the lamp to its socket by complementary latching members formed on the end of the lamp and its corresponding socket.

  • Patent number: 5230792
Abstract: An ultraviolet purification system in which ultraviolet radiation is generated by an ultraviolet lamp wherein the amount of ultraviolet radiation is varied in accordance with fluid flow. The intensity of the ultraviolet lamp is controlled by a circuit which is responsive to fluid flow for selectivity energizing the lamp to provide variable UV intensity output depending upon fluid flow. The circuit arrangement is such that the ultraviolet lamp is always started with a high current ballast. The selection of ultraviolet lamp intensity outputs according to fluid flow maximizes the useful life of the ultraviolet lamp and renders the system more efficient by reducing the amount of heat transmitted to the fluid being acted upon during periods of low flow or non-use.
