    Abstract: Amine and amine blend compositions neutralize acid environments in distillation overheads of hydrocarbon processing facilities. The neutralizers are composed of certain combinations of amines which are relatively stronger bases and more resistant to hydrochloride salt formation. The amines, when blended together, provide greater neutralization of condensed water present without increased potential for corrosive hydrochloride salt formation.

    Abstract: Heavy fuel oils or residual fuel oils can be stabilized with magnesium over-based compounds such as magnesium overbased carboxylates. It was surprisingly discovered that adding magnesium overbased carboxylates to the residual fuel oils shortly after thermal cracking gave much better results than can be achieved after the application of the carboxylates to the fuel oil after storage. Further, compounds containing at least about 21 wt % magnesium also give better results than compounds with 18 wt % or less, in one non-limiting embodiment. Magnesium overbased compounds can also be added to coker feedstocks to reduce coker furnace fouling. Treatment with the methods of this invention reduces asphaltene deposits and sludges.

    Abstract: Corrosive amine salts in hydrocarbon streams such as desalted crude oil streams can be prevented or avoided by adding certain amine scavenging chemicals to the streams. Suitable amine scavengers include, but are not necessarily limited to, carboxylic anhydrides and copolymers of carboxylic anhydrides, aromatic anhydrides, isocyanates, polyisocyanates, and epoxides. The non-corrosive reaction products of the amines and/or ammonia with these scavengers are preferably oil-soluble, non-basic and thermally stable. The amine scavengers bind up and react with the amines and/or ammonia to keep them from reacting with materials such as acids (e.g. HCl) to form corrosive amine salts.
