  • Patent number: 8555741
Abstract: The invention provides for a power steering apparatus comprising of a housing that extends along a longitudinal axis. A rack is disposed within the housing and supported for movement along the longitudinal axis by a bearing. A pinion supported by the housing is in meshing engagement with the rack. The bearing disposed around the rack includes a wall of a continuous varying radial thickness that circumferentially surrounds the rack. An adjustment device supported by the housing is connected to the bearing and rotatably adjusts the bearing relative to the longitudinal axis. The continuous varying radial thickness of the wall positions the rack as the bearing is rotated by the adjustment device relative to the pinion ensuring proper meshing engagement between the rack and the pinion.

  • Patent number: 8336413
Abstract: A power steering apparatus includes a housing defining a chamber. A rack is disposed within the chamber and is moveable along a longitudinal axis. A pinion extends into the chamber for meshing engagement with the rack. A bearing supports the rack relative to the housing and is moveable relative to the housing to re-position the rack relative to the pinion. An adjustment mechanism continuously biases the bearing in response to loosening of the meshing engagement to re-position the rack. A dampener resists the movement of the bearing to slow the re-positioning of the bearing. Preferably, the dampener includes a plastic fluid having a very high viscosity. The plastic fluid is disposed between adjacent moving parts to resist the relative movement between the bearing and the housing.

  • Patent number: 7980152
Abstract: A steering apparatus includes a housing defining a chamber and an aperture extending into the chamber. A rack is disposed within the chamber and moveable along a longitudinal axis. A pinion extends into the chamber for meshing engagement with the rack. A bearing supports the rack within the chamber relative to the housing. The bearing includes a wall having a continuously varying radial thickness. An adjustment mechanism includes a shaft partially disposed within the aperture in threaded engagement with the aperture and engaging the bearing for rotating the bearing about the longitudinal axis, thereby repositioning the rack relative to the pinion. A plug is disposed within the aperture. A spring is disposed within the aperture between the plug and the shaft to bias against the shaft, thereby urging rotational threaded movement of the shaft to produce linear movement of the shaft into engagement with the bearing.

  • Patent number: 7665747
Abstract: A rack and pinion steering gear assembly including a housing, a rack that is translatably moveable relative to the housing along an axis and a bushing operably disposed between the rack and housing. The bushing defines a gap which extends the entire axial length of the bushing. At least one compressible member may be disposed between the bushing and the housing with the compressible member extending across the gap in the bushing and fully encircling the bushing. The bushing may also include a radial flange that acts as a travel stop. The bushing may also be formed of an acetal material wherein the flange and a tubular portion of the bushing are axially separated by an intermediate portion having a relatively thin radial thickness. Axially extending recesses may be provided to enhance the flexibility of the bushing.

  • Patent number: 6776421
Abstract: A fluid sealing system constructed according to the invention includes a fluid housing having at least the fluid ports disposed in laterally fixed, parallel relation to one another. Within each port there is disposed a fluid seal. At least two associated fluid conduits are provided having distal ends which are extendible into their associated fluid ports into sealing engagement with the fluid seals. A retaining plate supports the conduits in laterally spaced, parallel relationship with one another in such a way that the conduits can move relative to one another in the lateral direction to enable the conduits to be installed together as a bundled unit while enabling for adjustment in the lateral spacing of the conduits during installation to achieve matched alignment between the spacing of the conduits and the fixed spacing of the fluid ports.

  • Patent number: 6637551
Abstract: A hydraulic transmission fluid supply system for operating a transmission of a vehicle includes a hydraulic pump having an inlet and an outlet communicating with an inlet of the transmission. A filter assembly includes a filter housing having an inlet communicating with a source of hydraulic fluid and a fluid outlet communicating with the inlet of the pump. A check valve is associated with the filter housing inlet to permit only one-way flow of fluid through the system such that in the event the transmission develops an air leak, the fluid is nonetheless maintained in the system and not permitted to back flow through the system.

  • Publication number: 20020148835
Abstract: The reservoir cap for a hydraulic fluid reservoir includes a cap plate and an integral stick, a gasket, a cup and a spring. The gasket is telescopically received on the stick and contacts a cap gasket surface on the cap plate. The cup has two radially extending ears with ramp contact surfaces and a central bore. The central bore has two spaced apart flat cup bore surfaces and cup projections that extend radially into the central bore. A coiled compression spring has one end in contact with the cup and another end in a spring retainer groove on the stick. The cup is mounted in a preliminary position on shelves on the stick. Rotation of the stick relative to the cup moves the cup off the shelves and the spring moves the cup to a working position.
