Abstract: Disclosed are topical compositions having improved substantivity such as improved water-proofing (e.g., resistance to perspiration) and rub-off resistance useful for protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet irradiation, such as sunburn and sun-induced premature aging of the skin.

Abstract: Disclosed are facial cleansing compositions in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion which contain specific surfactants with an HLB above about 10 in combination with specific polyalphaolefins and specific carboxylic copolymers which provide improved cleansing efficacy as well as improved rinsability and improved skin feel (such as a nongreasy feeling).

Abstract: Skin treatment compositions are provided which inhibit generation of free radicals in the skin and which include 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid, 6-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-2,3,4-trimethyl quinoline or mixture thereof, and optionally a stabilizer for the 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid which is monoethanolamine sulfite or sodium bisulfite.

Abstract: Disclosed are wax based cosmetic stick compositions comprising: from about 10% to about 50% of a wax type solidifying agent; and from about 5% to about 90% of a polyalphaolefin. These compositions preferably comprise from about 1.0% to about 40% of an active component, such as a sunscreen agent, analgesic, moisturizing and antiperspirant or a deodorant active.

Abstract: A clear oil-free, non-greasy skin moisturizing composition is provided which includes as the major component a copolymer of glycerol and methacrylic acid, that is, polyglycerylmethacrylate together with a polyol to enhance skin feel, one or more preservatives and water, and optionally one or more thickeners, one or more skin soothing agents, such as allantoin and/or dl-panthenol, one or more astringents, and/or one or more colorants.

Abstract: A non-greasy skin moisturizing composition is provided which includes as the major component a compound which has the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each may be H or lower alkyl, X is ##STR2## and n is 2 to 20, one or more preservatives and water, and optionally one or more thickeners, one or more skin soothing agents, such as allantoin and/or dl-panthenol, one or more astringents, and/or one or more colorants.

Abstract: A method for testing skin for presence of moisturizing substances is provided which method includes the steps of applying to the skin a moisturizer formulation which includes protein, urea and/or glucose and/or other reducing sugar such as fructose all of which bind with water and form a film or coating on the skin which inhibits moisture loss from the skin, and subsequently testing the skin for the presence of protein, urea and/or glucose and/or other reducing sugar remaining on the skin which is directly correlated to the amount of moisturizer formulation remaining on the skin. When it is determined through the testing that there has been at least a predetermined loss of protein, urea and/or glucose or other reducing sugar, additional moisturizer is then applied to the skin.

Abstract: Cosmetic and skin treatment compositions are provided which include as emollients acetylated soy bean derived sterols, namely, acetylated sitosterol, acetylated campesterol, and/or acetylated stigmasterol. The above-acetylated sterols impart improved hand feel and barrier properties to the compositions, are naturally compatible with skin and have improved skin penetration properties over unesterified sterols.

Abstract: Skin treatment compositions such as sunscreen compositions and moisturizer compositions are provided which include a tri(hydroxyalkyl)rutoside as a UV-A absorber and moisturizer, such as troxerutin preferably in combination with 4-(dimethylamino)benzoic acid, 2-ethylhexyl ester.

Abstract: Skin treatment compositions such as sun screen compositions and moisturizer compositions are provided which include a polyvinyl alkyl or alkenyl ester, such as polyvinyl stearate, to impart moisture resistance or substantivity to the compositions.

Abstract: Derivatives of 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid having excellent moisturizing properties are provided which have the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are lower alkyl and aralkyl and n is 1 to 8 and including cationic salts thereof such as the pyrrolidone carboxylic acid salt thereof. These compounds are useful as moisturizing agents.Cosmetics, shampoos, hair conditioners and skin toners containing such compounds are also provided.

Abstract: A delivery system for delivering topically active ingredients to the skin is provided which delivery system is formed of a water-in-volatile silicone emulsion which includes an interior water phase and an exterior silicone phase which contains the active ingredient to be topically applied. A volatile silicone and a non-ionic lipophilic low HLB emulsifier are employed in forming the emulsion. The above delivery system may be employed together with active ingredients such as sunscreen agents, various topically active drugs, fragrance oils, moisturizers, anti-perspirants, humectants, and other skin care and cosmetic ingredients such as excipients, colorants, preservatives, diluents and the like.

Abstract: Cosmetic and skin treatment compositions are provided which include as an emulsifier a glucamine-fatty acid soap. The glucamine fatty acid salt aids in forming stable emulsions without causing undue irritation to skin.
