    Abstract: A ceramic enamel composition contains 40-80% by weight of at least one lead-free metal oxide frit containing precursors of Zn.sub.2 SiO.sub.4, such as ZnO and SiO.sub.2, wherein the amount of Zn.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 precursors is less than about 35% by weight of the at least one lead-free metal oxide frit, 0.05-15% by weight of a zinc silicate seed material, and 19-37% by weight of a pigment. The zinc silicate seed material preferably contains crystalline Zn.sub.2 SiO.sub.4. The enamel preferably also contains a bismuth silicate seed material. The ceramic enamel can be employed as a coating around the periphery of automotive glass and is effective in improving appearance and reducing degradation of underlying adhesives by ultraviolet radiation.

The zinc borate seed material is preferably crystalline in nature, and promotes crystal growth upon firing. A preferred crystalline zinc borate seed material is selected from the phases Zn.sub.3 B.sub.2 O.sub.6 and Zn(BO.sub.2).sub.2, and mixtures thereof. Upon firing and press-forming a glass substrate coated with the enamel, components of the enamel adhere to the substrate while reducing sticking of the coated region to the forming die. The ceramic enamel is particularly useful in providing a colored border around the periphery of automotive glass and is effective in improving appearance and reducing degradation of underlying adhesives by ultraviolet radiation.

A preferred bismuth silicate seed material is selected from crystalline Bi.sub.12 SiO.sub.20, Bi.sub.4 (SiO.sub.4).sub.3, and Bi.sub.2 SiO.sub.5, and mixtures thereof. Upon firing a glass substrate coated with the enamel, components of the enamel adhere to the substrate. The glass can be formed with a die to a desired shape with reduced sticking of the coated region to the die. The ceramic enamel is particularly useful in providing a colored border around automotive glass, which enhances appearance and reduces degradation of adhesives by ultraviolet radiation.

    Abstract: A low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp (10) includes a tubularly-shaped envelope (12) sealed at each end with a stem assembly (14). A fluorescent coating (26) is disposed on the interior surface of the envelope (12) and an electric discharge sustaining fill gas is provided within a hollow interior (24) of the envelope (12). Each stem assembly (14) includes a glass base portion (30) which seals the end of the envelope (12), an electrode (16), and a tubularly-shaped, light-transmissive, glass shield (22). The electrode (16) is disposed within the envelope (12) such that an electric discharge occurs between the electrodes (16) upon operation of the lamp (10). The glass shield (22) extends past the electrode (16) to partially surround the electrode (16) and shield the interior surface of the envelope (12) from material ejected from the electrode (16). The glass shield (22) allows the electric discharge to unaffectedly pass through an open end (42).

    Abstract: A method of manufacture for a lamp involves making up, separate from an envelope, a sub-assembly comprising a lead structure and a vitreous body that surrounds it. In one form of this method, particles of vitreous material are pressed into a mold cavity that surrounds the lead structure, thus forming a compact surrounding the lead structure. This compact is sintered in an inert atmosphere, thereby forming the sub-assembly. Thereafter, the sub-assembly is placed in an opening in the envelope, and a hermetic seal is made between the envelope and the vitreous body in the interface region between the envelope and the vitreous body.
