  • Publication number: 20080268750
Abstract: A precision grinding apparatus for grinding face gears having a gear table portion controllably driven for rotation about a central axis, and also being movable in a vertical plane along an axis in a controlled manner. The apparatus further includes a case hardened face mounted on the gear table portion. A grinding wheel mounted on the apparatus has controlled driven rotation about a central axis C, and is provided with a grinding surface of predetermined shape. The grinding wheel is movable in a controlled manner toward and away from the gear along a feed axis V, the grinding wheel being movable in a controlled manner in a tangential direction with respect to the gear and orthogonal to the feed axis along a tangential feed axis wherein the motion of the grinding wheel in the C, V and TF axes, and movement of the gear in B and W axes, is controlled by a central control means.

  • Patent number: 6390894
Abstract: A face gear manufacturing operation wherein a set of oversized teeth are formed on a face gear or tapered pinion gear by a gear cutting operation. The oversized teeth are of a predetermined profile. The gear bearing the oversize teeth is then subjected to metallurgical surface hardening operation. At the conclusion of the heat treatment surface hardening operation, the face gear or pinion gear is subjected to a continuous grinding operation wherein a grinding wheel having a worm profile of a predetermined shape is rotated to grind the previously cut teeth to produce a finished tooth profile. The operation is CNC controlled. The gear producing apparatus requires only a slight modification to produce a face gear or a tapered pinion gear by the simple interchange of work heads.

  • Patent number: 5951434
Abstract: A transmission used as part of a drive unit to transmit power is coupled to a V6 engine drive shaft by a torque converter and includes an axially extending ring gear assembly, a sun gear positioned coaxially within part of the ring gear assembly and two planetary gear assemblies each spaced axially from the other and meshing with the sun gear and the ring gear assembly. The ring gear assembly is driven in rotation about its axis and an output drive shaft by the rotational forces of the motor output shaft and includes two different diameter annular ring gears which are each centered on and extend radially about the transmission axis. The annular ring gears have different diameters and radially inwardly extending teeth. The sun gear includes a portion axially aligned within each of the two ring gears. A clutch plate or pack, gearing or other band or pressure brake is provided to selectively permit or prevent the rotation of the sun gear about the transmission axis and relative to the output drive shaft.
