  • Patent number: 5973050
Abstract: A composition of matter is disclosed in which nanophase metal particles are effectively dispersed in a polymer matrix so that hitherto unattainable thermoelectric properties are attained. Preferred polymers and metals are taught. A method of making the composition of matter useful as a themoelectric composite material using a conducting polymer matrix is disclosed as is a thermoelectric cooling/heating device which uses that composition.

  • Patent number: 5695197
Abstract: A set for preventing flow of a fluid under pressure between a first surface and a second surface spaced-apart from the first surface. The seal is molded or otherwise formed from a composition comprising a blend of from about 79-87% by weight of a copolymer of polytetrafluoroethylene and perfluoropropylene vinyl ether, from about 10-14% by weight of polyimide, and from about 3-7% by weight of carbon fiber. The seal is interposable between the first and second surface effective to prevent the flow of the fluid therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5548903
Abstract: A wrench selector provides for the quick and accurate checking of the dimension of a nut or bolt across the flats thereof, in order to determine the corresponding size of the wrench or socket required for use therewith. The selector incorporates two jaws, with the first jaw extending from an elongated scale and the opposite jaw extending from a body sleeve through which the scale slides. The scale includes several rows of dimensional numbers thereon, with each of the numbers corresponding to a distance between the two jaws. The numbers are staggered diagonally across the face of the scale, in order to spread them for greater legibility. The body or sleeve includes a set of windows spaced laterally thereacross, which in combination with the diagonal array of dimensional numbers, results in only a single one of the dimensional numbers being exactly aligned within a corresponding one of the windows for any measurement.

  • Patent number: 5214632
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a metal matrix suitable for use in the manufacture of optical discs, in which a master plate is used which comprises a recording double layer of a synthetic resin in which each layer comprises a laser light-absorbing dye, the master plate is exposed to modulated laser light in which the laser light in both layers of the recording layer is absorbed and in which as a result of the exposure information bits are formed in the form of bumps having variable longitudinal dimensions and the same width dimensions and the master plate on the side of the recording layer comprises a metal layer which is separated from the master plate, as well as a master plate which is suitable for use in the method described hereinbefore.

  • Patent number: 5171027
Abstract: A ring shaped seal (10) for preventing fluid flow through a gap (32) between a rotating shaft (30) and a cylindrical wall (34) is positioned in a groove (28) in the shaft. The seal has, in cross section, a generally rectangular body (11) that has a slightly lesser width than the width of the groove. The body has a first end wall (12) that includes first pockets (18) and a second end wall (14) that includes second pockets (20). The seal has an outer wall (22) with a contact portion (26) that is in abutting contact with the cylindrical wall. When a higher pressure is applied on one side of the seal, the end wall of the seal on the side away from the higher fluid pressure is pushed against a side wall of the groove. The pockets in the end wall of the seal that is pushed against the groove, are open to the higher pressure and exert a force which counteracts the forces pushing the end wall of the seal against the side of wall of the groove.

  • Patent number: 4277710
Abstract: A high power ultrasonic generator for driving a transducer/horn assembly includes a transistor bridge inverter power output circuit connected to a DC source for producing an alternating output current. A pulse generating circuit produces a bipolar train of pulses for controlling the switching of the transistors in the bridge inverter circuit. The pulse widths are adjusted to provide a dead time therebetween at least equal to the storage time of the inverter transistors to prevent any overlap in the conduction of the opposite legs thereof. Overload control means reduces the widths of the pulses when the output current exceeds predetermined levels, thereby to reduce the output current. A starting circuit in the pulse generator gradually increases the pulse widths during start-up of the generator, and other circuitry protects against unduly high current loads in the power supply during AC turn-on of the system.
