  • Patent number: 5184896
Abstract: A self-expanding flexible pouch that can be used as the measuring device for reconstituting a concentrated product contained therein. The pouch includes an improved one-piece extensible stay located in the throat area of the flexible pouch that is biased toward a relaxed, expanded, circular configuration but is initially held substantially flat in a stressed condition by the sealed top portion of the pouch. When the top portion of the pouch is removed, the improved stay expands to its relaxed, expanded configuration and thereby expands and opens the throat area of the pouch. The improved stay comprises a one-piece, continuous extensible loop having a pair of opposed hinges. The hinges are thinner in thickness than the remaining portions of the loop and aligned with the side peripheral edges of the pouch. Two opposed thick-walled sections are located between the opposed hinges. The opposed thick-walled sections provide the automatic opening force for the pouch.

  • Patent number: 4898477
Abstract: A self-expanding flexible pouch that can be used as the measuring device for reconstituting a concentrated product contained therein. The flexible pouch includes an extensible stay located in the throat area of the pouch that is biased toward a circular or elliptical configuration but initially held substantially flat in a stressed condition by the pouch's sealed top portion. When the pouch's top portion is removed, the extensible stay expands to its unstressed circular configuration and thereby expands and opens the pouch's throat area. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the pouch's bottom section is provided with a pleated bottom gusset panel that is attached to the sidewall panels' inner surface. When the reconstituting fluid is poured into the pouch, the pouch's bottom gusset panel unfolds and drops downward which allows the pouch's bottom section to also expand and assume a substantially tubular configuration.

  • Patent number: 4110485
Abstract: Roast and ground coffee in the form of high-sheen flakes and having improved extractability is disclosed. A process for preparing flaked roast and ground coffee of high sheen and improved extractability by passing roast and ground coffee through a roll mill operating at differential speeds and temperatures is also disclosed. The process comprises: passing roast and ground coffee through a roll mill wherein a first roll has a peripheral surface speed of 30 ft./min. to 850 ft./min. and a surface temperature of from 0.degree. to 140.degree. F and a second roll has a peripheral surface speed corresponding to from 2 to 8 times that of the first roll and a surface temperature of from 150.degree. to 300.degree. F.; and removing from said roll mill roast and ground flakes of high sheen and extractability.
