  • Patent number: 10689122
Abstract: A system for detecting icing includes an optical sensor configured to view at least a portion of an exterior surface or component of an aircraft and to output sensor data indicating at least one optical quality of the exterior surface or component, and an icing detection module. The icing detection module is configured to receive the sensor data from the optical sensor, compare the sensor data to predetermined quality data indicating at least one known optical quality of the exterior surface or component without icing, and determine the presence of icing on the exterior surface or component based on a difference between the sensor data and the predetermined quality data.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 2017
Date of Patent: June 23, 2020
    Assignee: SIKORSKY AIRCRAFT CORPORATION
Inventors: George N. Loussides, Sean S. Carlson, Garrett Pitcher
  • Patent number: 10482776
Abstract: A landing zone evaluation and rating sharing system includes a central processor unit (CPU), at least one sensor input operatively connected to the CPU, a communication controller operatively connected to the CPU, the communication controller being operable to pass data to other systems associated with the aerial vehicle, and a landing zone (LZ) evaluation controller operatively coupled to a non-volatile computer readable storage medium having computer readable program instructions embodied therewith. The computer readable program instructions are executable by the central processor unit to receive data received through the at least one sensor input, evaluate the data to determine a LZ rating for a particular landing zone, and communicate the LZ rating to one or more systems associated with the aerial vehicle.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 20, 2017
Date of Patent: November 19, 2019
    Assignee: SIKORSKY AIRCRAFT CORPORATION
Inventors: George N. Loussides, Harshad S. Sane

  • Patent number: 9879986
Abstract: A method of determining cable angle includes acquiring image data of a cable and a load coupled to a rotorcraft using three-dimensional (3D) spatial perception system, constructing an image of the cable and load using the image data, and determining the angle of the cable relative to the external load at an interface of the cable and external load based on the image.

  • Patent number: 9786189
Abstract: A method of controlling an aircraft in the event of pilot incapacity includes detecting, using at least one sensor, the occurrence of an event relating to a pilot's capacity to control the aircraft, determining whether the event justifies a controlled takeover of the aircraft from the pilot, asserting a controlled takeover of the aircraft from the pilot if it has been determined that a controlled takeover is justified, and executing a controlled landing of the aircraft without assistance of the pilot.
