Patent number: 5215111Abstract: A pneumatic servo comprises a motor having a shaft for rotation in response to an electrical signal. A cam is connected to the shaft for rotation therewith. The cam has an outer profiled periphery and opposite sides. A pneumatic nozzle having an opening for directing a flow of gas toward one side of the cam near the periphery, obscures the flow by different amounts as the cam rotates to create a back pressure in the nozzle comprising a pneumatic signal. A curved projection engages an opposite side of the cam, the projection being aligned with the nozzle opening and reducing oscillation excursions of the servo at gas pressures in the nozzle of above 12 psi.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 1992Date of Patent: June 1, 1993Assignee: Elsag International B.V.Inventors: George R. Patent number: 5010322Abstract: A combustion control system includes a sensor assembly and a process controller, the sensor assembly including sensors for providing output signals indicative of process variables, the process controller responding to the output signals to maintain a desired operation of the process. The process controller continuously monitors parameters of the sensors and provides alarms whenever any of these parameters deviate from setpoint values, the process controller automatically prioritizing these alarms to provide a display of only the most relevant alarms. A housing enclosing the process controller provides EMI/RFI shielding of the process controller including the attenuation and absorption of the EMI/RFI energy.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1988Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Assignee: Gas Research InstituteInventors: John J. Patent number: 4682526Abstract: In a method for providing musical accompaniment in response to the playing of an accompaniment-type musical instrument, accompaniment chord voicing is randomly selected from a pluraltiy of stored possibilities and the chord is sounded according to the selected voicing. In a preferred embodiment, the voicings may be stored separately from rhythm information according to which the chord is to be sounded, and the selection of chord voicings is constrained by a pre-selected range of chord tones. In another method for providing musical accompaniment having at least one stored melodic figure, melodic information is represented as a plurality of tokens independent of chord type and the tokens are subsequently converted to note parameters appropriate for a preselected chord type. The tokens are preferably related to the scale functions of the melodic information and may also contain information for each of a plurality of chord sub-types.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1984Date of Patent: July 28, 1987Inventors: Robert J. Hall, George R. Hall, Jack C. Cookerly

Patent number: 4719834Abstract: In a method for providing musical accompaniment in response to playing of a processor-controlled musical instrument, a plurality of processes corresponding to different musical components of the accompaniment are executed in a pseudo-concurrent manner. Each component includes a plurality of musical events related according to a tempo at which the accompaniment is to be sounded. A portion of one of the processes is executed to perform at least one of the musical events, whereupon the process is suspended for a musically appropriate period of time substantially equal to the time before the next event of the process. While the first process is suspended, a portion of at least one other process is executed to perform another musical event. The other process is then suspended for another musically appropriate period of time. Execution of the processes is continued in this manner, one portion of a process at a time, such that the processes overlap to produce a coherent musical accompaniment.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1984Date of Patent: January 19, 1987Inventors: Robert J. Hall, George R. Hall, Jack C. Cookerly

Patent number: 4630517Abstract: In a method for providing musical accompaniment in response to the playing of a musical instrument, wherein the accompaniment has a plurality of musical components performing different musical functions, a preselected number of virtual channels implementing the musical components of the accompaniment are mapped into a smaller number of physical channels such that the allocation of physical channels between the musical components fluctuates over time. In another embodiment, one of the musical components of the accompaniment is a fill note component, and the allocation of physical channels between it and at least one other component of the accompaniment may be either static or dynamic.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1984Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Inventors: Robert J. Hall, George R. Hall, Jack C. Cookerly

Patent number: 4583859Abstract: A filter cleaning system for an opacity monitor which has a light source and a light sensor on opposite sides of a first optical path through a gas whose opacity is to be measured, comprises a mechanism for calibrating the opacity monitor during a calibration period and a purging air arrangement for supplying purging air to pipes in the first optical path to keep the interior of the pipes clean. A primary filter is connected to the blower for filtering the purging air. Three-way valves are connected to the input and the output of the blower so that a secondary filter can be utilized to supply clean air in a reverse flow through the primary filter to clean the primary filter. The primary filter is cleaned during this blow-down period at the same time that calibration is taking place for the opacity monitor. In this way, no measuring time is wasted and still the life of the primary filter is extended.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1984Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventor: George R. Hall, II

Patent number: 4557419Abstract: A temperature-actuated flow control device has a fluid inlet connected to an exhaust line with a control chamber located therebetween. The control chamber has a free-floating bi-metallic circular element which is flexed in response to temperature changes between a first position stopping flow between the inlet and the exhaust line and a second position opening the flow therebetween. This flow control device, when adapted to a gas sampling system, allows the bi-metallic element remain in a first position at normal operating temperatures to permit the continuous sampling of the sample gas. Whenever the temperature falls below the dew point of the sample gas, the bi-metallic element returns to its second position to stop the sampling of sample gas by the system to prevent condensation in the system.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1983Date of Patent: December 10, 1985Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventor: George R. Hall, II

Patent number: 4542675Abstract: Musical accompaniment is provided in different musical styles to the playing of an instrument, upon selection of one of the styles. A preferred tempo rate, or a range of acceptable tempo rates, are provided in response to selection of the musical style, causing the accompaniment to be sounded at or near a musically correct tempo in all cases. In one embodiment, a preferred tempo rate and a range of acceptable deviation from that rate are provided for each style, causing the accompaniment to be played at the preferred rate unless altered within the acceptable range by a performer.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1983Date of Patent: September 24, 1985Inventors: Robert J. Hall, Jr., George R. Hall, Jack C. Cookerly

Patent number: 4508002Abstract: A method and associated apparatus for embellishing the melody played on an electronic musical keyboard instrument. A set of musically-derived tables relates harmonious accompaniment notes to the melody in accordance with the chosen harmony and is addressed to generate a signal that represents at least one appropriate accompaniment note. The latter signal causes sounding of selected accompaniment notes to produce the desired musical harmony. A choice of voicing style and an orchestration option are additionally provided within the scope of the apparatus and method herein.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1981Date of Patent: April 2, 1985Assignee: Norlin IndustriesInventors: George R.
