  • Patent number: 8095728
Abstract: A method for retrieving a logical block, including receiving a request to read the logical block, and obtaining metadata associated with the logical block, wherein the metadata includes a replication type used to store the logical block and physical block locations in a storage pool for each physical block associated with the logical block. The method further includes obtaining power state information including a power state for the storage devices specified in the physical block locations, selecting a first set of physical block locations using the metadata, the power state information, and a power-usage selection policy, and generating I/O requests, where each I/O request specifies one of the first set of physical block locations. The method further includes issuing the I/O requests, receiving physical blocks in response to the I/O requests, and constructing the logical block using the physical blocks.

  • Patent number: 7297963
Abstract: A method of evaluating thermal stability of a fuel and an apparatus used therein. The method includes heating the fuel to a given temperature, directing light through the heated fuel a first time wherein the light is of an intensity and of a wavelength to induce fluorescence and obtaining a first fluorescence data, directing the light through the fuel at least a second time that is later in time and obtaining a second fluorescence data, and measuring any changes to fluorescence from the heated fuel over time.

  • Patent number: 6571676
Abstract: A gun system has a two piece cannon assembly that is separated between a removable chamber instead of a traditional breech, and a projectile forcing cone. The chamber has a plug at one end that can accommodate any type of ignition system, and the other end is open and is attached to the barrel with a connection fitting. High pressure gases created by combustion of the propellant are sealed with a high-pressure gas compression seal at the interface between the chamber and the barrel. The connection fitting provides an attachment for a rear cannon bearing slide, which rides on rails attached to the main support structure, and also reacts any torque induced into the barrel from the actuation of the chamber/barrel locking collar. A turntable upon which are mounted two chamber elevating/support mechanisms and two projectile loader/rammer mechanisms is positioned around one of the main support structure legs.

  • Patent number: 6034058
Abstract: The didemnin class of biologically active cyclodepsipeptides, isolated from the marine tunicate Trididemnun solidum, has shown considerable antitumor, antiviral, and immunosuppressive activities. Didemnin B (DB) and most other natural didemnins contain a common macrocycle and differ only in the composition of the side chain. In the present invention, structural modifications were introduced in the side chain to afford several didemnin analogues for structure-activity relationship studies. The latter have shown that the linear side chain portion of the didemnin core structure can be altered and, in some cases, provide significant gains in bioactivities. Of the compounds synthesized the new [Ala.sup.9 ] didemnin B is the most active against the L1210 (murine leukemia) cell line, at the 0.04 ng/mL level.

  • Patent number: 5337599
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining the thermal stability of fluids, particularly for testing the deposition characteristics of fuels, comprising a conduit system which connects in series; a test fluid reservoir having a movable piston capable of discharging the fluid, a heater section in which is mounted a heated tubular member, a time reactor of a sufficient volume to increase the residence time of the fluid therein, and a water displacement reservoir. The system also incorporates a filter located at an outlet of the heater section designed to trap deposits which may form due to the heating, and a similar filter located at an outlet of the time reactor designed to trap further deposits that may form with additional time. A differential pressure measuring device is connected across each of these filters to measure the pressure drop therethrough.
