  • Patent number: 4822943
Abstract: A process is disclosed whereby cumene and/or benzene is brought into contact propylene in the presence of a ZSM-12 catalyst to selectively produce para-diisopropylbenzene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 26, 1985
Date of Patent: April 18, 1989
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4629818
Abstract: There is provided a catalyst comprising (i) ZSM-5 or ZSM-11, (ii) gallium and (iii) thorium. Also provided is a process for converting ethylene, propylene and/or propane into aromatics with this catalyst. Modification of ZSM-5 with both Ga and Th has been found to result in greater yields of liquid and BTX from a refinery off gas stream than can be obtained with ZSM-5 modified only with Ga.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 4, 1985
Date of Patent: December 16, 1986
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4565899
Abstract: Para-ethyltoluene dehydrogenation catalyst compositions and processes for using such catalysts are provided. The catalyst compositions comprise a catalytically active iron compound, e.g., iron oxide; a potassium catalyst promoter, e.g., potassium carbonate; an optional chromium compound stabilizer, e.g., chromic oxide, a copper compound, e.g., copper chromite, and a zinc compound, e.g., zinc ferrate. Utilization of particular amounts of zinc ferrate and copper chromite in dehydrogenation catalyst compositions of this type will provide a catalyst especially suitable for promoting the highly selective dehydrogenation of para-ethyltoluene to form para-methylstyrene with excellent conversion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 14, 1984
Date of Patent: January 21, 1986
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4469908
Abstract: A process for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons with alkylating agents having from one to five, and preferably three to five, carbon atoms. The reactants are brought into contact, preferably in the liquid phase, in the presence of a crystalline zeolite catalyst characterized by a silica to alumina ratio of at least 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1-12. The reaction is conducted at 100.degree. C. to 300.degree. C. and a pressure of from about 10.sup.5 N/m.sup.2 to about 2.times.10.sup.7 N/m.sup.2.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 30, 1982
Date of Patent: September 4, 1984
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4205189
Abstract: Benzene or alkylbenzene (e.g., toluene) is alkylated with propylene to produce diisopropylbenzenes or isopropylalkylbenzenes, which in turn are selectively cracked to remove the 1,4-isomer. The resultant product, containing a high level of the 1,3-isomer, is then oxidized to 1,3-dihydroxybenzene or 3-alkylphenol (e.g. 3-methylphenol) in significant yield.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 14, 1978
Date of Patent: May 27, 1980
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Lewis B. Young, George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4197413
Abstract: A four-step method for the selective production of the 1,3-isomer of methylphenol comprising the alkylation of toluene with propylene in the presence of a specified type of zeolite alkylation catalyst followed by the selective reaction, via a specified type of shape selective zeolite, of the 1,4-isomer of the alkylation product to leave the 1,3-isomer thereof in excess of equilibrium. Subsequent oxidation and acid catalyzed rearrangement results in desirably high yield of 3-methylphenol.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: April 8, 1980
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Warren W. Kaeding, Margaret M. Wu, Lewis B. Young, George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 4133750
Abstract: A process for removing phosphate ore from siliceous materials using a material comprising a combination of a sulfonated hydrocarbon and a kerosene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 6, 1976
Date of Patent: January 9, 1979
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: 3975300
Abstract: V-P complex catalysts and metal promoted V-P complex catalysts having high activity and selectivity and good physical strength for the oxidation of alkenes, alkanes, cycloalkanes and mixtures rich in them to dicarboxylic acid anhydrides (e.g. maleic anhydride) are prepared by forming a paste of a vanadium compound (vanadium pentoxide), an organic reducing agent, a promoter metal salt or compound (if used), and phosphoric acid; and drying paste.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 1, 1974

    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
    Inventor: George T. Burress
  • Patent number: RE30157
Abstract: Mixtures of C.sub.8 aromatic hydrocarbons are contacted in vapor phase with acid zeolite ZSM-5. The xylene content is thereby isomerized and the ethyl benzene content of the charge is converted in a manner which results in net increase of aromatic rings.
