  • Patent number: 8240983
Abstract: Gas turbine engine systems involving gear-driven variable vanes are provided. In this regard, a representative gas turbine engine system includes: a ring gear assembly operative to be mounted within an engine casing; and a vane module having a first vane airfoil and a first gear, the first gear being operative to engage the ring gear assembly such that movement of the ring gear alters a position of the first vane airfoil.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 22, 2007
Date of Patent: August 14, 2012
    Assignee: United Technologies Corp.
Inventors: George T. Suljak, Jr., Michael G. McCaffrey
  • Patent number: 8007229
Abstract: A ring vane nozzle for a gas turbine engine according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes a multiple of fixed turbine vanes between an inner vane ring and an outer vane ring and a multiple of rotational turbine vanes between the inner vane ring and the outer vane ring, each of the rotational turbine vanes rotatable about an axis of rotation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 11, 2010
Date of Patent: August 30, 2011
    Assignee: United Technologies Corporation
Inventors: Michael G. McCaffrey, John R. Farris, Eric A. Hudson, George T. Suljak, Jr.

  • Publication number: 20090067978
Abstract: A turbine section of a gas turbine engine includes a ring of turbine nozzle segments each having paired turbine vanes. Turbine throat area is modulated by rotating each rotational turbine vanes about an axis of rotation which is located such that rotation changes the turbine throat area concurrently between one rotational stator vane and two adjacent fixed turbine vanes. Each paired turbine vane doublet includes at least one rotational turbine vane between two fixed turbine vanes.
