The system employs a local oscillator, which does not need to be phase locked to the signal. The signal may be consistently recovered, even when the polarization state varies over time. Additionally, the signal may be recovered when it comprises two channels of the same wavelength that are polarization multiplexed together. In addition, any impairment to the signal may be reversed or eliminated.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of compensating for compact digital domain chromatic dispersion. The distortion of an optical signal due to chromatic dispersion is compensated by a digital signal processing in the electrical domain, either prior to the optical transmitter or following the receiver. The circular coefficient approximation and sub-band processing reduce the amount of computations to execute a given level of chromatic dispersion compensation compared to a direct finite impulse response filter implementation.

Abstract: An insecticide composition is provided for killing insects comprising a metal sequestering agent and an insecticide. The composition is particularly useful for killing scale insects, particularly Cycad Asian Scale insects that are hosted by plants of the cycad phyta division. Since the scale insect's shell includes calcium, the metal sequestering agent, when combined with an insecticide and/or fungicide, substantially increases the likelihood that the insecticide and/or fungicide will come into contact with the insect and kill the insect.

The two-way speech recognition and dialect system includes a database of dialectal characteristics and queries a user to determine their likely dialect. The system uses this determination to reduce the time for the system to reliably transcribe a user's speech into text and to anticipate dialectal word usage. In another embodiment of the invention, the two-way speech recognition and dialect system is capable of transcribing the speech of multiple speakers while distinguishing between the different speakers and identifying the text belonging to each speaker.

Abstract: An ocean wave energy converter (WEC) utilizes the relative motion between permanent magnet and induction coil assemblies to generate electricity. The permanent magnet assemblies and induction coil assemblies are separately housed in watertight enclosures, enabling a wide range of wave energy converter configurations, nearly unlimited stroke and obviating the need for a common magnet/coil enclosure with seals. The magnet assemblies are constructed with surface or buried magnets. The wave motion moves a magnet assembly relative to a stationary coil assembly, or vice versa. Either the magnet assembly or the induction coil assembly are made long enough to provide the generation of electricity over a desired operational range of travel. Various means are provided to maintain the spacing (“gap”) between the magnetic and coil assemblies relatively constant.
