  • Publication number: 20060272124
Abstract: A control assembly for use with a door closer on a swinging door. The control assembly has a housing adjacent to the door closer, a clip having an actuating and a locking tab, and a biasing member that yieldably biases the clip to a released position. The actuating tab can be actuated from outside of the housing to engage the locking tab with part of the door closer to maintain the position of the door. The locking tab can automatically be released from the door closer by further opening the door whereupon the biasing member returns the clip to its released position so that the door may close.

  • Publication number: 20040148733
Abstract: A door holder has a piston reciprocable in a cylinder and a rod extending from the piston through one end of the cylinder. The outer end of the rod is pivoted to a door frame and the opposite end of the cylinder is pivoted to the door, or visa versa. A retainer is provided on the rod to prevent the piston and cylinder from contracting after the door has been opened. To release the retainer so that the piston and cylinder can contract, a coil spring is compressed between the retainer and the end of the cylinder. Upon a slight extension of the piston and cylinder beyond the door holding position, the spring pushes the retainer out of engagement with the cylinder so that the piston and cylinder can contract and the door can close.

  • Publication number: 20040004359
Abstract: A door latch mechanism includes a latch mounted in a housing on the door for movement from a retracted position to an extended latching position. A lever is pivoted to the housing. The lever moves the latch to the retracted position when the lever is pivoted to a working position. The lever may be pivoted to its working position by an actuator on one side of the door and also by an actuator on the opposite side of the door.

  • Patent number: 6634057
Abstract: A control assembly for holding a pivoted door in an open position and releasable to enable the door to swing to a closed position. A rotor is connected to the door in a manner such that when the door is opened the rotor is rotated in one direction to a locking position and when the door is closed the rotor is rotated in the opposite direction. A locking detent is engagable with the rotor to prevent the rotor from rotating in the opposite direction and thereby to hold the door open. The detent is retracted when the rotor is rotated past the locking position to a release position. The detent is held retracted until the rotor is rotated past the locking position enabling the door to close.

  • Patent number: 5700044
Abstract: A door latch operator for retracting a door latch comprises a handle having upper and lower end portions formed with front faces attachable to a door and a vertical hand grip portion between the upper and lower end portions. The upper end portion is in the form of a hollow housing having a chamber therein. The hand grip portion is in the form of a generally U-shaped channel which communicates at one end with the interior of the housing. A lever for operating the door latch is pivoted in the housing and extends into the channel in the hand grip portion to a position where it may be squeezed and rotated from a withdrawn position to a latch retracting position by a hand on the hand grip portion. The handle and the lever are both solid brass forgings.

  • Patent number: 5639132
Abstract: Door latch-operating mechanism for retracting a door latch. A rotary shaft is mounted in a housing and is adapted to retract a latch when rotated. The shaft is turned by a handle on the outer end of the shaft. A tube is sleeved on the shaft between the handle and housing. The housing and handle are solid brass forgings. The tube is also solid brass. Any wear of the handle will not be noticed since it is solid brass rather than being made of some less attractive metal plated with brass. The shaft is completely covered and concealed by the brass housing, handle and tube.

  • Patent number: 5495639
Abstract: A door closing apparatus for closing a hinged door in which a door closer is attached to a spring unit which in turn is mounted on the door frame by a bracket. The spring unit has a torsion spring within a housing which rotates on the bracket. One end of the spring is affixed to the housing and the other end of the spring is held from rotating by a ratchet type mechanism. The ratchet mechanism may be rotated to adjust the spring. The door closer is capable of adjustment by rotating the closer cylinder. In order to rotate the cylinder, it must be disconnected from the door. A stop on the bracket engages an abutment on the housing to prevent the closer from snapping back when it is disconnected from the door. The stop and abutment are also of assistance when adjusting the tension of the spring on the housing.

  • Patent number: 5157806
Abstract: A door closing piston-cylinder assembly which is designed to permit the door initially to move to closed position relatively rapidly but with controlled restraint until it approaches the fully closed position whereupon the door continues to move but considerably more slowly so that it will close smoothly and softly. The cylinder has a large diameter bore adjacent one end and a bore of smaller diameter adjacent the other end. A piston assembly has a first piston dimensioned to reciprocate in the large bore and a second piston of smaller diameter dimensioned to reciprocate in the smaller bore. The pistons have check valves which close when the pistons move in one direction and open when they move in the opposite direction. The smaller piston has a metering valve which is open at all times. A bleeder valve is provided in the end of the cylinder having the small bore. A coil spring is provided to move the pistons in a direction to close the door.

  • Patent number: 5029913
Abstract: A door latch assembly in which the latch has a relatively long travel between fully extended and fully retracted positions. A latch retractor in the form of a rotor has a camming member which partially retracts the latch in response to initial rotation of the rotor and which fully retracts the latch in response to further rotation of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 4864835
Abstract: A door latch and lock mechanism especially for storm doors and screen doors, having a latch and a lock bolt. The latch can be retracted from the outside by a button which pushes a plunger in a lengthwise direction. When the plunger is rotated in one direction it will lock the latch in the latched position and also extend the locking bolt to its locked position. When the plunger is rotated in the opposite direction, the latch is released and the bolt is retracted. The plunger is rotated in one direction or the other from the outside of the door by a key operated mechanism spaced from the push button and operatively connected to the plunger by connecting links.

  • Patent number: 4576405
Abstract: There is disclosed a door latch mechanism having a sliding latch mounted to slide from a retracted position to an extended position in which it is adapted to engage in a keeper slot to hold the door closed. A pivoted actuator for the latch is adapted to engage a striker during closing of the door to retract the actuator. When the actuator is retracted it retracts the latch. A manual operator for retracting the actuator is operable from the inside or outside of the door. A locking member prevents retraction of the sliding latch to lock the door.

  • Patent number: 4552393
Abstract: A latch mechanism for storm doors, screen doors and the like. A pivoted latch is movable to and from an operative position in which to engage a keeper to maintain the door closed. The latch is moved away from operative position by a pusher assembly. When the door knob is turned, cam surfaces between the door knob and pusher assembly effect movement of the pusher assembly necessary to move the latch away from operative position.

  • Patent number: 4520639
Abstract: A latch and lock mechanism having a pivoted latch and means for retracting the latch. A dead bolt is also provided. A rotatable bolt actuator has a pin and slot connection with the bolt to move the bolt to its extended, locking position. The bolt actuator also has means for simultaneously blocking retraction of the latch to provide in effect a double dead bolt lock.

  • Patent number: 4432576
Abstract: A door latch for storm and screen doors having pre-drilled bolt receiving openings therein by which the latch housing are secured to opposite sides of the door. One of the latch housings has a plurality of openings therein and the other housing has a pair of inserts each having an inwardly extending internally threaded mounting post adjacent one end thereof and projecting through one of the openings in the door for receiving a threaded bolt inserted through an aligned opening in the other housing. The inserts are reversible end-for-end to vary the spacing between the mounting posts thereby to adapt the latch for use on doors having differently spaced bolt openings therein.
