  • Patent number: 7921704
Abstract: Alcohol concentration level of flex fuel is estimated based upon in-cylinder ionization signals. The in-cylinder ionization signals are integrated and the rotational completion point of a chosen percentage of the integration total is identified as the integration location for the operating conditions under observation. The calculated integration location correlates with alcohol concentration level of flex fuel, and the integration calculations provide a basis for a virtual flex fuel sensor that provides calculated estimates of alcohol concentration rather than direct sensing using an expensive physical flex fuel sensor.

  • Publication number: 20110010074
Abstract: A method for controlling the start of combustion and peak burn rate of an internal combustion engine system on a cycle-to-cycle basis including multiple direct fuel injectors, multiple indirect fuel injectors, and multiple liquid fuels. The actual start of combustion and actual peak burn rate are calculated using in-cylinder pressure or ionization. A predetermined start of combustion and a predetermined peak burn rate are selected. The start of combustion and peak burn rate control algorithm includes controlling a fuel ratio, an injection ratio, and a residual gas recirculation ratio. A predetermined fuel ratio, a predetermined injection ratio, and a predetermined residual gas recirculation are calculated by combining feed forward ratios and closed loop control ratios corresponding to the three ratios. The predetermined ratios are employed so that the system achieves the predetermined start of combustion and predetermined peak burn rate.

  • Patent number: 7818998
Abstract: Disclosed is a way to detect ionization within a cylinder of an internal combustion engine where the engine selectively operates in either a spark ignition mode or a HCCI mode. A single ionization detector circuit adapts in response to a control input to alter its bias voltage and its gain to selectively enable effective detection of ionization for each of two different operational modes of an internal combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 7784272
Abstract: An engine exhaust treatment system using a control system is described. In one form of the present invention, engine exhaust gas contaminates are passed through a selective reduction catalyst and a contaminate reducing agent is injected into the catalyst. The amount of contaminates present in the exhaust proximate to the selective reduction catalyst are sensed using at least one sensor. In one embodiment, input signals are sent to a control system from the sensor or sensors and a feedforward control combined with a feedback loop is used to transform these signals and a predetermined catalyst output contaminate value into an output signal. The output signal instructs a provider to inject contaminate reducing agents in a manner to efficiently track the desired predetermined catalyst output contaminate value.

  • Publication number: 20080153367
Abstract: Ringing noise in a tube or in tubes comprising a propeller shaft of an automotive drive is attenuated by an elastomeric ring positioned in each shaft. The elastomeric ring is a split ring, preferably made of recycled rubber, wherein the ring normally has a rectangular shape and is bent into a cylindrical shape for insertion in the tube. The outward bias of the ring is sufficient to hold the ring in place within the tube, while a gap in the material of the ring allows the ring to exert further expansive force against the inner surface of the tube while the tube is rotating. A single ring located midway between the ends of a tube is sufficient to attenuate ringing noise in one example of a tube, however a plurality of spaced rings may be used in other tube configurations to attenuate ringing noise. Preferably, the elastomeric ring has an axial extent of about 5% of the length of the tube.

  • Patent number: 6728380
Abstract: A system and method for suppressing cyclic noise components of a sampled sensor signal generates an error compensation signal that is subtracted from the sampled sensor signal to produce a corrected signal. A moving average of the sampled sensor signal, or sensor error signal, is obtained that corresponds to an error signal free of the non-cyclic component. An adaptive noise compensation algorithm is implemented by a compensation module with a minimum number of multiplications. The compensation module relies upon a unit base vector having a length equal to the number of base functions used to represent the cyclic noise component of the sensor signal, or equal to the number of samples over the sampling interval of the cyclic noise. This base vector is multiplied by an adaptive gain, which is a function of the difference between the sensor error signal and a compensation signal output from the adaptive compensation module.
