  • Patent number: 4078813
Abstract: The sealing element comprises an annular active portion of elastomer material adapted to be compressed radially between the outer surface of a male end and the wall of a cylindrical recess in a socket in which the male end extends and means for anchoring the sealing element in the socket, the active portion comprising an outer annular face, an inner annular face and an end face having, when the sealing element is at rest, a minimum inside diameter exceeding the outside diameter of the male end and a maximum outside diameter exceeding said minimum inside diameter by an amount exceeding the radial clearance between the recess and the male end. The end face is connected to each one of the annular faces of the active portion by a circular edge, and, when the sealing element is in the free state, in axial section, the rise or dip of the arc generating the end face is at the most equal to 1/5th of the length of the associated chord.

  • Patent number: 4033613
Abstract: The socket of one of the pipe elements has on at least a part of its outer end a radial abutment defining an abutment face facing inwardly of the socket. A device for locking the joint against forces tending to separate the pipe elements comprises at least one locking member having the general shape of a sector of a cylindrical ring and defining an inner wall which is secured to the smooth end portion of the other pipe element. At least one projecting portion is provided on the locking member and bears axially against the abutment face.

  • Patent number: 4027904
Abstract: A coupling in which a male end of a pipe element is inserted in the socket of a second pipe element and the axes of the pipe elements may have an angular deviation therebetween. An abutment projection on the male end is axially supported by an inner shoulder on the socket through a ring, bearing against the projection on the side of the latter adjacent the shoulder, and a mass of hardenable material disposed around the projection and the ring between the sealing element of the coupling and the shoulder. In the case where the shoulder of the socket defines a large radial clearance between itself and the male end, an intermediate tensile locking means is interposed, in the axial direction, between the hardenable material and the shoulder and, in the radial direction, between the male end and the socket, the outside diameter of this means having, with respect to the inside diameter of the socket, axially inwardly of the shoulder, sufficient clearance to allow the angular deviations of the pipe elements.

  • Patent number: 4018461
Abstract: A male end is inserted in a socket with radial clearance. An annular elastically yieldable sealing element has an outer heel portion disposed in an inner groove in the socket. A single lip portion on the sealing element extends inwardly of the socket and has a radially inner end which grips the male end. The heel portion has, at rest, an axial dimension which is of the same order of magnitude as its radial dimension and exceeds the axial dimension of the groove. The axial dimension of the groove is greater than the greatest radial space between the male end and the edge of the groove adjacent the entrance of the socket.
