  • Patent number: 4995444
Abstract: A framework template of non-reinforcing material is provided containing, distributed therein and bonded to the building constituents thereof, a reinforcing material such as particles, fibers or whiskers of high tenacity nitrides, carbides, borides, oxides and the like, this distribution being arranged according to some given pattern of orientation and packing density. The template is placed in a mould which is then filled with molten metal which solidifies by cooling. During casting, the constituents of the template may be destroyed by the heat, or they may dissolve in the metal, or they can remain embedded therein.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute
Inventors: Mark Jolly, Guy Negaty-Hindi, Georges Haour
  • Patent number: 4915729
Abstract: A molten metal is placed in contact with a bed of moving beads. The molten metal breaks up into fine particles which are rapidly cooled in contact with the beads and consequently acquire a structure which is typical for such rapid cooling.

  • Patent number: 4865876
Abstract: The metal substrate (4) is coated with a coating (6) of another metal of alloy of 4-50 .mu.m thickness by deposition of a molten metal or alloy (5) through a nozzle (2), the melting temperature of this metal or alloy being lower than that of the substrate metal. This coating comports, starting from the substrate, a layer of intermetallic compound of thickness comprised between 0.5 and 4 .mu.m, within a limit not exceeding 40% of the total thickness, the remainder of the coating being formed of the initial coating metal of alloy in a proportion of 97 to 99.5% by weight.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4719962
Abstract: The metal substrate (4) is covered with a coating (6) consisting of another metal or alloy having a thickness of 4 to 50 .mu.m, by deposition of molten metal or alloy (5) through a nozzle (2), this melting point [sic] being lower than that of the substrate metal. This coating comprises, at the interface with the substrate, a layer of intermetallic compound with a thickness of between 0.5 and 4 .mu.m not exceeding 40% of the total thickness, the remainder consisting of the initial metal or alloy used for the coating, in a proportion of between 97% and 99.5% by weight.

  • Patent number: 4559187
Abstract: A free flowing stream of molten metal is motioned to encounter a higher diameter and faster moving free flowing stream of a cooling liquid, such encounter resulting in the splitting of the molten metal into droplets. The droplets in contact with the cooling liquid and entrained therewith are allowed to solidify by cooling; optionally they may undergo further splitting before complete solidification by impingement upon a target arranged to intercept the course of the cooling stream.

  • Patent number: 4529628
Abstract: The coating device comprises a furnace (1) comprising a crucible (4) and a lateral distribution conduit (3) whose outlet communicates with an externally open release aperture (2) serving to distribute the molten metal over the entire width of the metal strip (6) to be coated. This strip (6) is entrained from a supply spool (7) to a storage spool (8) and passes over a positioning roll (10) mounted opposite to the release aperture (2), the spacing between this roll and the edge of the release aperture being adjustable by means of a screw (15). A bank of burners (16) is located opposite to the reverse of the strip (6) and upstream of the release aperture (2) in order to heat the strip before it passes in front of the release aperture (2). A molten metal bath is thus constantly maintained between this release aperture (2) and the face to be coated of the strip (6) which is covered with a layer of metal during its displacement.
