  • Publication number: 20140338887
Abstract: An annular fluid containment device includes a mandrel, and packing assembly disposed about the mandrel to form a seal between the mandrel and the well casing. A sleeve disposed within the mandrel defines a space between the mandrel and the sleeve. Seals are disposed between the mandrel and sleeve at upper and lower ends, wherein the upper seal is located above a location of the packing assembly, and the lower seal is located below the packing assembly. Upper and lower passages are defined in the wall of the mandrel, in communication with the annular space, wherein the upper fluid passage is located above the packing assembly and below the upper seal, while the lower fluid is located below the position of the packing assembly and above the lower seal. Hence, a fluid passage is formed bypassing the packing assembly within the mandrel.

  • Publication number: 20120285677
Abstract: An annular fluid containment device comprises one or more fluid seals disposed on a section of production string tubing, and a vent tubing extending along the section of production tubing from below the fluid seals to above the fluid seals. The fluid seals are sealed against the vent tubing and the production tubing, and configured to form a seal within an annular space between the production tubing and a well casing, with the vent tubing providing venting for pressure equalization between the annular space below the fluid containment device and the annular space above the fluid containment device. The fluid containment device placed in a production string below a leak in the casing prevents unwanted fluid from entering the production zone. An additional tubing may be provided similarly to the vent tubing to allow introduction of a fluid into the well below the fluid containment device.

  • Patent number: 7757756
Abstract: A bridge plug comprises an axially compressible cylinder having plural expansion sleeves. A mandrel extends axially through the cylinder, and has a threaded portion engaged with the cylinder, such that rotation of the mandrel causes compression of the cylinder. A setting tool comprises a housing containing a motor and a drive shaft driven by the motor. The setting tool is configured to be removably coupled to a bridge plug with the drive shaft drivingly coupled to the bridge plug's mandrel, such that operation of the setting tool motor causes compression of the bridge plug. The setting tool is used to lower a bridge plug within a well casing, and to compress the bridge plug causing, outward protrusion of sealing members of the bridge plug to set the bridge plug in place. Cement may be applied above the set bridge plug to form an easily drillable seal.

  • Patent number: 4185705
Abstract: A well perforating tool (9) for drilling holes in a well casing substantially from and at right angles to a vertical well bore within which the casing is disposed. The tool (9) includes an elongate housing (15) for insertion within the casing and having a detachable boot (13) at one end thereof for centralizing the longitudinal axis of the tool within the casing. Two motors (53,85) are disposed within the housing (15) for rotating a flexible drill shaft (97), and advancing and retracting the flexible drill shaft (97) with respect to the interior wall of the casing. The entire tool is supported by a cable (19) which also includes power supply and signal lines for independently activating the motors (53,85) from an above-ground control station and ascertaining the depth of drill shaft penetration.
