    Abstract: Methods of treating spent pot lining (SPL) and bauxite residue are disclosed. The treatment processes are capable of producing a ferrosilicon alloy, an off-gas, and/or a byproduct material resulting in the safe disposal of SPL and bauxite residue. The treatment processes may be continuously carried out in an electric arc furnace at a temperature in the range of from about 1500° C. to about 2200° C. and for a period of from about 15 to about 100 minutes.

  • Method using selected carbons to react with Al2O and Al vapors in the carbothermic production of aluminum

    Abstract: In a method for recovering Al from an off-gas (3,4) produced during carbothermic reduction of aluminum utilizing at least one smelter (1,2), the off-gas (3,4) is directed to an enclosed reactor (5) which is fed a supply of wood charcoal (7) having a porosity of from about 50 vol. % to 85 vol. % and an average pore diameter of from about 0.05 ?m to about 2.00 ?m, where the wood charcoal (7) contacts the off-gas (3,4) to produce at least Al4C3 (6), which is passed back to the smelter (1,2).
