Abstract: A portable device for use in detecting dangerous materials and illegal substances in shipping containers with the aid of a trained dog. The device is used by a dog handler and constructed to be able to withdraw air from within a shipping container, through a high air vent in it's sidewall, and present the withdrawn air to the dog to smell. The dog is beside the handler on the ground beside the container when smelling the withdrawn air.

Abstract: A method and device for the detection of vapors of cocaine and associated compounds are disclosed. The method involves sampling a volume of air suspected of containing cocaine vapors, passing this air through a filtration system that removes any particulate matter and binds vapors of cocaine and associated compounds, if present, for further analysis. A preferred associated compound-vapor is that of ecgonidine methyl ester (EDME), and a marker for the presence of cocaine. The device is comprised of a sampling, filtration and vacuum port components and can be easily attached to a container, and suction source, for the sampling of air.

Abstract: To facilitate collection of sample, for analysis in an ion mobility spectrometer or the like, a collection device is provided which can be mounted on the fingers, for example two fingers, of a user's hand. The collection device is formed of top and bottom layers of a sheet material, which are secured together along three sides and open end along a fourth side, to enable the user's fingers to be inserted. Mounted on a user's fingers, the device is run over surfaces of interest to collect a sample. It is then placed in a frame holder, and then inserted into an inlet station of an analysis device. There, any substances of interest are caused to pass into the analysis device for a reading to be taken.
