  • Patent number: 6792185
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for aligning and maintaining the alignment of the transmitting unit and the receiving unit in an optical wireless communication system. The receiving unit includes an optical bundle positioned at the focal point of an objective optic element. The optical bundle is comprised of an array of optical fibers, arranged surrounding the receiving fiber. The receiving unit also includes a number of detectors that measure the optical signal strength on a corresponding fiber in the optical bundle. The array of fibers is used to detect the location of the received signal relative to the receiving optical fiber and to provide feedback to adjust the orientation of the optical bundle to optimize the received signal strength. When misalignment occurs between the received signal and the receiving fiber, some of the incident received signal will be captured by one or more of the outer optical fibers.

  • Patent number: 6734411
Abstract: In the method and apparatus for providing an optical fiber interconnect, a transmitter transmits an optical signal through an optical fiber. The transmitter does not transmit to a controller, information about the power of the transmitted optical signal near the input end of the fiber. The controller receives an indication of the power of a returned portion of the transmitted optical signal. The controller causes the lowering of the power of the transmitted optical signal to a predetermined level based the received indication.

  • Publication number: 20030095302
Abstract: An optical communication system is provided that has a network including a transmitter station that conveys data through a wireless pathway to a receiver station. An obstruction of the pathway is determined by measuring the attenuation of an optical beam arriving at or intending to arrive at a target receiver station and comparing the value with the attenuation of other optical beam(s) arriving at or intending to arrive at one or more reference receiving stations in the optical communication system. The values are interpreted to determine the nature of the blockage and various parameters in the optical data transmission system controlled according to the presence of a local blockage or global blockage. A further consideration in determining the type of blockage may be through measuring the backscattering of the optical beam. In addition, other aspects of the present invention relating to the storage and transfer of selected transaction data are described.

  • Patent number: 6456637
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a waveguide laser or amplifier having a peak absorption wavelength is provided with pump emitters having wavelengths deliberately offset from the peak absorption wavelength. The offset wavelengths of the emitters are chosen to enhance the thermal stability of the laser or amplifier. In one exemplary embodiment, the laser or amplifier is pumped by a bimodal distribution of emitters.

  • Patent number: 6411414
Abstract: An optical wireless link using wavelength division multiplexing. A transmitter transmits an optical signal to a receiver over a free space medium, such as the atmosphere. The transmitter uses single mode optical structures between the lasers and the transmitting telescope, including one or more erbium-doped single mode fiber amplifiers.

  • Patent number: 6116818
Abstract: An ocean plow device and accompanying method which incorporate a passive plow blade and a jetter tool working in conjunction with one another to lower drawbar and increase cable deployment speeds. In order to avoid cavitation due to sand dilation, in one embodiment of the plow device, the jetter tool includes nozzles oriented in a downward and backward direction relative to the plow device which creates a flow pattern to turbulently remove surface soil in front of the jetter tool in a rapid manner. The jetter tool is pivotally suspended from a point in front of the passive plow blade, such that the jetter will be free to find its own equilibrium position. That is, the pivotal mounting enables the jetter tool to rotate upward in harder soils and become fully extended in softer soils in order to reach the equilibrium position. The passive plow blade behind the jetter tool provides a constant burial depth for the cable and also provides protection from side loads encountered during deployment.
