  • Patent number: 7055209
Abstract: A single motor rack and pinion driven sootblower is converted to a dual motor version. The single motor version includes a lance tube which is advanced and retracted transversely on a carriage and is further rotationally driven by a translational mechanical drive which rotates the lance tube as it is being axially driven. The conversion is accomplished by disengaging the translational drive by removing the original drive hub within the drive housing of the carriage and this original drive hub is substituted with a tubular rotary drive hub which is not in driving engagement with the translational drive when installed. A second rotational motor is then mounted on the carriage assembly and connected to externally exposed portions of the substitute hub through a gear drive for independently rotating the substitute hub and thereby independently rotating the lance tube about its axis.

  • Patent number: 4813384
Abstract: A soot blower lance for power generation boilers and the like, particularly for high temperature operation, in locations exposed to radiant heat. The lance is of multi-section tubular construction, with high temperature alloys used in the sections exposed to maximum temperatures. The lance is provided with a thin outer coating of ceramic, such as fused silica and zirconia. Significantly extended operating life is realized, along with significant energy savings from reduced usage of cleaning fluids for cooling purposes.

  • Patent number: 4580310
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a soot blower of the long retracting type. In accordance with the invention, a revolving roller assembly is provided to support and guide the lance tube of the soot blower during its working motion along a predetermined path of travel. The rollers of the revolving roller assembly are mounted in a manner to provide a generally circular opening whereby the lance tube may be received through the opening to be supported and guided by the rotatable rollers as it moves along the predetermined path of travel. Pursuant to an important feature of the invention, the frame structure mounting the rotatable rollers comprises a modular construction advantageously arranged to accommodate repair and/or replacement of the rotatable rollers without having to remove the lance tube from the assembly. Generally, the circular frame of the invention comprises a main cage component and several cage segments.

  • Patent number: 4498213
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a soot blower of the long retracting type. In accordance with the invention, a novel cable drive system is provided to impart a traverse motion to the lance tube of the soot blower. The cable drive system comprises a rotatable, cable-supporting drum, a first cable including one end fastened to the drum and extending from the drum to an operative connection with the traveling carriage supporting the soot blower lance tube and a second cable including an end fastened to the drum and extending from the drum to an operative connection with the traveling carriage on a side thereof opposite to the side which is connected to the first cable. Pursuant to a significant feature of the invention, the rotatable drum is positioned at a location midway between the forwardmost and rearwardmost ends of the predetermined path of travel.

  • Patent number: 4437201
Abstract: The invention is directed to a soot blower for cleaning the interior surfaces of a boiler by discharging a suitable cleaning fluid from a nozzle against such surfaces. The soot blower includes a novel drive system operable both as the horizontal drive for the traveling carriage of the soot blower and as an independently controllable rotary drive for rotating the lance tube of the soot blower. The horizontal drive for the traveling carriage is associated with a motor means whereby operation of the motor means energizes the horizontal drive to advance and retract along a predetermined horizontal path of travel. The rotary drive for rotating the lance tube is mounted on the traveling carriage and is mechanically coupled to the motor means through the horizontal drive whereby operation of the motor provides a driving input for the rotary drive.

The drum is selectively rotatable in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction and rotation of the drum is operative to move the traveling carriage in an advancing or retracting direction along a predetermined path of travel.
