Patent number: 9902146Abstract: A system and method for aligning a generally flat, planar object and for facilitating the mounting of the generally flat planar object, such as a printing plate, in near perfect alignment in a cylindrical manner. A printing plate cylinder is covered with stickyback having a release liner. A narrow axial strip of release liner is removed and replaced with a piece of release liner that may be pulled or tugged from beyond the end of the printing cylinder. The printing plate is next rolled into a cylindrical form and held in place on a device which allows registration marks on the printing plate to align the two ends of the printing plate prior to the printing plate ends being temporarily adhered to one another using a piece of tape or similar product. The aligned printing plate is next slid over the printing cylinder which is covered with sticky back.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2014Date of Patent: February 27, 2018Assignee: Gerald J. Patent number: 7703810Abstract: A security device that increases the number of design options available for a machine testable security feature formed in part from a light absorbing (e.g., magnetic) material, while more effectively hiding or concealing this material, is provided. The inventive security device achieves these results by physically separating this security feature from a visually detectable or public security feature. Also provided by way of this invention is a process for preparing the inventive security device as well as a security document that employs one or more such devices.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2004Date of Patent: April 27, 2010Assignees: Crane & Co., Inc., Technical Graphics, Inc.Inventors: Paul F. Cote, Timothy T. Crane, Stephen B. Curdo, Gerald J. Gartner, Daniel G. Leeds

Patent number: 7628110Abstract: A system and method for adhering and aligning a generally flat, planar object to an adhesive layer, and for facilitating the mounting of the generally flat planar object, such as a printing plate, in near perfect alignment in a cylindrical manner. The method includes providing a generally flat, planar object such as a printing plate and an adhesive member having an adhesive layer at least on one surface. The adhesive member is preferably approximately the same size as the printing plate. The printing plate is mounted to the adhesive member such that there is one edge of the adhesive member which is not initially covered by the printing plate and one edge of the printing plate which overhangs the adhesive member. The combined adhesive member/printing plate structure is next rolled into a cylindrical form and held in place on a device which allows alignment marks on the printing plate to align the two ends of the printing plate prior to the printing plate being fully adhered to the adhesive member.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2006Date of Patent: December 8, 2009Inventor: Gerald J. Patent number: 7243951Abstract: Durable security devices that are resistant to chemical attack and mechanical degradation and security articles employing such devices, are provided. By way of the durable security device of the present invention, opposing longitudinal borders adjacent an information-bearing layer are sealed, thereby preventing corrosive and/or degrading materials from reaching this layer through these sealed borders. In a preferred embodiment, at least a portion of the information-bearing layer is fully encapsulated, thereby rendering this portion or layer and the information conveyed thereby, impervious to chemical attack.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2003Date of Patent: July 17, 2007Assignee: Technical Graphics, Inc.Inventors: Paul F. Patent number: 6930606Abstract: A security device, such as a security thread, uses multiple security detection features provided by combining metal and metal/magnetic security features on a carrier substrate. The security detection features basically comprise an optionally repeating pattern of discrete metal/magnetic indicia and discrete metal or metal-dot formed indicia. The security detection features may also include at least one metal strip extending along the length of the carrier substrate and/or a plurality of metal dots located on metal-free portions of at least one surface of the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2001Date of Patent: August 16, 2005Assignees: Crane & Co., Inc., Technical Graphics Security Products, LLCInventors: Timothy T. Patent number: 6805926Abstract: A security label having one or more security elements is used on or in association with items, such as consumer products, that have value and are susceptible to counterfeiting. The security label is preferably used as a primary label directly affixed to the item or product. The security element(s) can be affixed to an outer or inner label surface, embedded within the label film or paper layer and/or laminated between two or more layers. One type of security element includes a security thread having indicia formed thereon that are not easily reproduced or duplicated. Another type of security element includes a machine-readable security element that provides encoded machine-readable verification data.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2002Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: Technical Graphics Security Products, LLCInventors: Paul F. Cote, Stephen B. Curdo, Gerald J. Gartner, Gary R. Wolpert

Patent number: 6549131Abstract: A method of covering, embedding or burying magnetically encodable regions, invisible to the naked eye at least on one side, in a magnetic/metallic security device begins by providing a security device carrier substrate having an imaged metallic region. A foil film is provided on a release coated carrier film. One or more magnetic regions are provided on either the foil film layer or the carrier substrate. Patterned, flat, or roller heated dies are used to contact and bond the foil film to the security device carrier substrate in at least those regions of the magnetic regions thereby producing a security device having covered, embedded or camouflaged magnetically encodable regions.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2000Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignees: Crane & Co., Inc., Technical Graphics Security Products, LLCInventors: Paul F. Patent number: 6255948Abstract: A security device having multiple security features is used with an item, such as a secure document, ticket, label or tag, to authenticate the item and/or encode data pertaining to the item. One example of the security device includes a carrier substrate, a metallic layer disposed on the carrier substrate, and a magnetic layer disposed on the metallic layer in substantial registration with at least a portion of the metallic layer, thereby providing both metallic security features and magnetic security features. The metallic layer and the magnetic layer also form graphic or visually identifiable indicia on the carrier substrate to provide a visual security feature. According to one method, the metallic layer is applied to the carrier substrate, the magnetic layer is applied to the metallic layer, and the layers are etched to form the graphic indicia. The magnetic layer can, in one embodiment, include a magnetic chemical resist that is printed on the metallic layer in the form of the graphic indicia.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1998Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Technical Graphics Security Products, LLCInventors: Gary R. Patent number: 5284363Abstract: A multi-layer label for displaying information is disclosed which includes at least two layers which may be repeatedly partially separated and re-adhered to one another, such that a portion of the outer surface of a lower layer is exposed upon separation of a portion of an upper layer from it. The inner surface of the upper layer of the label is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive. To form a lift tab for the upper layer at least one corner of the inner surface is either coated with varnish to deaden the adhesive, or alternatively, a corner is not coated with adhesive. The outer surface of the lower layer is selectively coated with an adhesive release material such that the coated portion releasably bonds to the inner surface of the upper layer, and, the portion of the outer surface of the lower layer not coated with the adhesive release layer permanently bonds to the upper layer thus forming a hinge between the two layers. A method and apparatus for manufacturing a multi-layer label is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1991Date of Patent: February 8, 1994Assignee: Gar-Doc, Inc.Inventors: Gerald J. Gartner, Paul Cote, Michael S. Kelley
