  • Publication number: 20120099112
Abstract: Multi-core optical fiber probe includes a multi-core optical fiber (and method of manufacturing the probe) including a plurality of cores adjacent a cladding material, and a plurality of angled reflectors disposed at a distal end of the cores. An angled reflector of the plurality of angled reflectors deflects light propagating in the core at a deflection angle that is different from an axis of light propagation in the core. Light propagating toward a distal end of the core of the multi-core probe is emitted, after reflection by the corresponding reflector, out of the multi-core optical fiber probe.

  • Patent number: 6545813
Abstract: A lenticular screen component of a rear projection display screen has lenticular elements formed on a viewer surface. Identical lenticular elements cover the entire lenticular screen component and are repeated horizontally at a constant displacement. A given lenticular element includes a pair of reflective side portions and a refractive tip portion interposed between the side portions. One of the pair of side portions forms a sloped region at a joint between the one side portion and a side portion of an adjacent lenticular element. The sloped region is at an angle in a range between 5 and 15 degrees with respect to the first axis. The one side portion is covered with a reflective coating in at least a region of the one side portion that includes the joint. The pair of reflective side portions reflects light rays incoming from a projector towards the refractive tip portion for refracting the reflected light rays via a surface of the refractive tip portion facing a viewer.

  • Patent number: 6430207
Abstract: A single-transverse-mode laser has a gain medium and a single-transverse-mode fiber disposed within a resonance cavity. The single-transverse-mode fiber has a filter portion and a partial reflection portion. The filter portion of the single-transverse-mode fiber is coupled to the gain medium and disposed within the resonance cavity. The partial reflection portion of the single-transverse-mode fiber defines one end of the resonance cavity. The gain medium has a double-tapered structure.

  • Patent number: 6363188
Abstract: An apparatus comprises a first waveguide, a second waveguide and a transitional coupler. The first waveguide is defined by a first material and a second material. The first waveguide has a core and a cladding. The first material is the core of the first waveguide, and the second material is the cladding of the first waveguide. The second waveguide is defined by a third material and a fourth material. The second waveguide has a core and a cladding. The third material is the core of the second waveguide, and the fourth material is the cladding of the second waveguide. A cross-section of the core of the second waveguide is larger than a cross-section of the core of the first waveguide. The transitional coupler has a first end integrally formed with and operationally coupled to the first waveguide, and has a second end integrally formed with and operationally coupled to the second waveguide. The transitional coupler includes a co-directional grating.

  • Patent number: 6363088
Abstract: An optical system for generating light includes a doped fluoride fiber which is used to convert energy of light at a first frequency, supplied by an optical pump, to light at a second frequency. The second frequency may be lower (down-conversion) or higher (up-conversion) than the first frequency. The optical pump is coupled to the doped fiber. A reflector may be placed at each facet of the doped fiber to form a laser cavity. The reflectors at the facets of the fiber are tuned to a desired emission frequency of the fiber. The laser cavity may be formed either by two substantial reflectors, each positioned at a facet of the doped fiber, or by a substantial reflector, positioned at one facet of the fiber, and a partial reflector, positioned at the other facet of the fiber. When two substantial reflectors are used, other means, such as a wavelength division multiplexer or diffraction grating may be provided in the laser cavity fiber, to provide an output path for the light at the second frequency.

  • Patent number: 6034380
Abstract: A semiconductor electro luminescent diode having a body of a semiconductor material with the body having a pair of spaced opposed end surfaces, side surfaces and top and bottom surfaces. The body includes therein an active layer which extends from one end surface to a point spaced from the other end surface. The active layer is of a width narrower than the distance between the side surfaces. Also, the active layer has a portion adjacent the other end surface of the body which is tapered to come to a point. First clad layers of a material having an index of refraction smaller than that of the active layer are at opposite sides of the active layer and extend between the end of the active layer and the other end surface of the body. Second clad layers of a material having an index of refraction larger than that of the first clad layers but less than the index of refraction of the active layer are on the first clad layer.

  • Patent number: 6018536
Abstract: A laser produces light having multiple wavelengths. The laser comprises a gain medium disposed within the laser resonance cavity, a dispersion element coupled to the gain medium and within the laser resonance cavity, and a wavelengths-elective element coupled to the dispersion element and defining an end of the resonance cavity. The wavelength-selective element has non-abutting reflective segments. At least one of the multiple wavelengths corresponds to a position of at least one segment from the non-abutting reflective segments.

  • Patent number: 4096756
Abstract: The effective thickness of a piezoelectric unit comprising a plurality of contiguous layers is varied by selectively short circuiting one or more layers with switch means. This varies the electro-acoustic properties at an operating frequency that is exhibited between the respective acoustic ports of the unit and an electrical circuit coupled across the electric port of the unit. Specific embodiments of such a unit, switch means and electrical circuit are useful in a control device for acoustic-wave propagating systems.
